I don't know the ins and outs of the whole thing, but it sounds like you have to be high enough on the world list, not just in your country, if you don't have the time standard. I plan to read up on it more
So with Schweitzer having 1170 points…. I’m hearing more and more of the relevance of the points. However, is there something I’ve been missing? Are athletes supposed to have a certain # of points or something to make it Worlds, etc? (Instead of a qualifying time as I’ve been accustomed to, etc.).
Asking in all seriousness.
Cliff notes version: World Athletics recently lowered the world standard for the olympics a crazy amount for all events making it super hard. Mens 10k 27 flat, for example.
They made it purposely difficult. However, runners can also bypass having 'the standard' by racking up points and they want people to meet the qualifier by having points.
An example of this may be: You don’t have the standard, but your World ranked #5 and have defeated everyone you’ve faced this year kind-of-thing…
I *think* so. For Tuohy, she'd have to run sub 14:52 to meet the Olympics qualifier in 5k and top 3 at trials to get in by time. Or get rankings and still place top 3 at trials to qualify by rankings.
Honestly the US 5k is deep so if someone has not run 14:52 by june 2024 they aren't beating cranny etc al at trials anyway.
