I guess the one minuscule silver lining in this story (I would not say such a thing to those who knew her) is how quickly the perpetrator was caught. 30+ years ago, before cell phones, today’s prevalence of surveillance, and such a developed DNA database, this guy might have been able to do this with numerous victims over the course of months or years.
Cops need to act quickly. "You've got 1 hour to tell us where she. If you don't, we're going for the death penalty. If you do tell us, you can get life with parole."
And I know torture isn't allowed, but this is the perfect time when you'd use it if it was allowed.
And to think I'm almost someone who intellectually had almost talked myself out of both the death penalty and torture as being viable options moving forward (too much of a chance you are making a mistake). But in this case, it's pretty damn clear what happened.
And you need the option of the death penalty so you've got something to negotiate with this guy. But I guess they probably believe she's already dead.
Taking precautions is the sensible thing to do even if the risk is small. Saying that “running at 4:20am should not be dangerous” does not make it not dangerous in many places.
This type of reasoning might be a little beyond you. What if I told you that you experienced much more danger in getting up in the morning and commuting to work than you ever would running at 420 am? Humans are notoriously bad at risks assessment in everyday life. If you got in a bad car accident on your way to work that was no fault of your own, would you accept the criticism that ‘you should have taken precautions?’
While I appreciate Rojo’s passion as we should all be anti-crime (even if we don’t live in crime-ridden sheethole cities like Baltimore), but Rojo’s above post is just stupid. Not only do cops not decide the charges or the sentence, you’d have a perfect scenario to throw any guilty verdict out based upon what Rojo suggests the cops do.

I do think the legal system should be much more swift when the evidence is overwhelming in kidnapping/murder cases. I don’t know exactly what evidence they have on this guy.
If there is video footage of the abduction, I agree that extreme measures should be used. If it’s just his SUV, who’s to say he was even driving it? They should be able to figure it out but it takes tIme.
A lot of times, it’s more complex. No body, no weapon, more circumstantial. That makes it difficult. If this guy is guilty, I hope he rots.
From my experience working in a supermax prison, inmates commit tons and tons of crimes while in prison. They dont necessarily receive outside charges for it but get write ups and sent to solitary confinement

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WREG) — WREG has obtained a copy of the affidavit in Eliza Fletcher’s abduction. Police records indicate the abduction was violent and caught on camera. Fletcher is the grandd…

Oh you can fool yourself all you want into thinking you are saying something new or deep, but it’s neither. If you don’t see the differences between those situations of low probability, you should educate yourself in conditional probability and base rates.

Huh? Prosecution is authorized to and makes deals like those all the time with the accused or accomplices. Judges won’t sentence beyond what prosecution asks unless there’s mandatory minimums.
Yeah, if your really understood those buzzwords that you’re spouting off with you’d understand that a woman running alone at any time of the day is in about the same danger. Milquetoasts like you would keep them locked away.
But do go ahead with some back of the envelope calcs to show us your analysis. Put up or shut up.

Yeah, hadn’t read that yet. Still I think you need to say beyond a reasonable doubt it was him in the video. The rest is not enough without due process, unfortunately.

If you ever saw the original "Dirty Harry", Clint Eastwood tortures a suspect who has abducted and raped a teenage girl. He gets the confession but the suspect is freed because of Eastwood's methods (no search warrant, torture). That movie is 50 years old. Now, with body cameras and police scrutiny over every arrest (especially minority arrests), there is very little chance that this perpetrator will talk. And why should he? His DNA is probably all over her body.

You are not worth my time.
dmb's point that a woman running alone at any time of the day is in about the same danger is valid: Consider the following women who were murdered while running:
Sydney Sutherland: Raped and murdered in August 2021: Abducted around 3:00pm
Mollie Tibbetts: Murdered in July 2018: Abducted around 7:30pm (1 hour before sunset)
Karina Vetrano: Murdered in August 2016: Abducted around 5:00pm
Vanessa Marcotte; Murdered in August 2016: Abducted around 2:00pm
Ally Brueger: Murdered in July 2016: Shot around 2:00pm
Based on the above sample (which is obviously small) the most dangerous times to go running are either mid afternoon or early evening. To think that running at 4:30am is inherently more dangerous is false.

dmb was being a jerk and made some silly claims beyond just the time of day ignoring the fact that simply being a young woman makes one an order of magnitude more vulnerable in contrast to more gender neutral car or plane accidents; even more so if the woman seems affluent and/or attractive and no one else is around.
As for time of day, your data suffers from the small data problem and from the self selection of most sensible women choosing to not run in the dark alone in unpopulated places in the first place. The place matters too as I already noted in my earlier post.
You are welcome to encourage women in your life to run at 4:30 anywhere they want, but you’re not going to change my mind.
After reading the updates, I'm in shock by the man. He spends 20 years in prison for this, makes another attempt a year later, and was so careless with it.
He wore the same slides he casually wears, he left them and her cellphone around the scene later to be found, took his cellphone which was backtracked by police at the time of the abduction, and then left the car he adducted her in at his known address and left it there all morning. Then frantically cleans out his car and washes his clothes at his address with a witness. You'd expect this from a rookie.
I think only time will tell with a deeper look into security footage around the area trying to track the vehicle. This and the fact that he did this at 16 makes me think it was a cheap, contract job which is really sad. I'm pulling for her.
