The two were laughing and joking to each other from the pre-call walk all the way until lap 8. Gidey took over the lead to block the wind on the home stretch and then expertly blocked the Kenyans from moving up when Tsegay took the lead back. They sent it up so well for Tsegay to kick the last lap knowing full well Hassan isn't in shape and no one else could match Tsegay. Wonderful race - I hope these two women race a lot more the rest of the season, love em both

Definitely looked like team tactics for a Tsegay win. They tried the same thing in the 1,500, but Kipyegon was just too good.

First km 3:15. Next km 2:52. Next 2:55, then 2:58, then 2:45. It's is one thing to kick off a slow race or slowly wind up in a nice negative split. That kind of yoyo popped a bunch of sub 14:35 women. It's brutal.
Notice the top non African was Grovdal who didn't try go with the first 2:52 surge 1km in.
This is what the Africans do best, and Gudaf and Gidey 100% were discussing when to slow and when to push. It's totally different to anything you get on the North American circuit.
