Your comparison is flawed. If MJ had the yips in '98 and knew that he couldn't shoot, pass or dribble, he's a liability to his team. By your logic it would be better for his team for him to go out there and blow it for them, because sitting would be bailing on his teammates. Sometimes it's better to park yourself because you know you're a liability.

Er...um...Jordan did quit, twice. -- once after each three-peat.

Um well his dad was murdered in 93 (plus there is still suspected gambling concerns) that led Jordan to take a break the first time. Then in 98 he retired. Is he not allowed to retire?

And he didn’t quit mid season/completion which is the whole point here.

The issue wasn't weather her current quitting is a sign of weakness or not. It was this assertion that you and others in this thread are making that she is weaker than those of the past. Yet, if those of the past failed to ever accomplish even half of what she has in her life time, I think the fact she quits a single competition is pretty irrelevant in the question of whether others of the past were as tough as her. Quite obviously they were not, or we wouldn't even be discussing this. No one makes it to her level being mentally weak, on that I would think most people could agree.

You are equating the quantity of success with mental toughness. That isn’t a good equation. Are you saying she is tougher then strug because she has more medals then her?

To repeatedly dominate all of the competition in the world and execute elements no on else can do over and over again. That does not take more mental toughness than someone who is incapable of doing the same? Is that your position?

That is a very hard statement to rebut successfully!

MJ’s dad would NOT have wanted him quit after he was murdered - super embarrassing and weak of MJ and quite frankly a disgrace to his family’s legacy.

My position is that landing a vault on an ankle with severe tendon damage to benefit the team requires more mental fortitude then winning several other completions, yes.

Are you his dad? Then you don’t know what he would have wanted. I think his dad would have wanted him to be happy. If retiring was what made Jordan happy, his dad probably would have been cool with that. And again, HE DID NOT QUIT MID SEASON

So in your mind pushing through that physical discomfort in that moment takes more mental fortitude than years spent becoming the best the world has ever seen? Got it.

I didn't miss the point of anything. You threw out Michael Jordan quitting during the finals to make some sort of glib point about letting down teammates, without considering the circumstances that leads to the quitting. Additionally, you fail to consider whether the quitting is better for the team than having her continue to flounder. Your problem is you want to apply black and white answers to a gray world. You do it because you think it makes you look smart. In reality most people reading this probably think you're a jackass

Not really. I bet if your tried for a minute or two, you could come up with several legitimate rebuttals to that broad opinion/statement.

She has been training 24/7 and at the highest level for years, winning multiple gold medals and performing some of the hardest skills in the world. It’s not like she’s new to gymnastics and couldn’t handle the pressure. This has obviously built up over the years, add in the Nassar abuse (which took a huge toll) as well as this whole past year of covid rules. I honestly think she got to her breaking point. I have seen Simone biles compete so many times and yesterday was totally out of character for her. Since none of you have probably ever done gymnastics, it’s a huge mental focus sport and if something mentally is off, you could end up seriously injured.

I hate how people are also blowing over mental

health issues right now. If anyone has seriously struggled with extreme anxiety/depression/panic attacks, you know it can hit you and sometimes there is absolutely no way in that moment you can just talk yourself out of it. Mental health issues are real and part of the reason people feel stigma around them are because of comments like what is in the thread (you are too soft, just get over it, etc).

Yes some athletes can push through them, but some can’t. They are humans and if they are in the midst of a mental health attack, it’s really not something to take lightly. It’s more than likely if she continued she would have fallen on other events, potentially injured herself and that would have lowered the team score even more. Her stepping out realizing it wasn’t safe in my opinion was the right thing to do.
