But 2hrs a day is not a huge waste of energy. It's just a function. You don't think someone like Gebrselassie was getting atleast 2hrs a day of running, going from home to school and then chasing goats?
When you don't have cars or horses, 2hrs of moving around is simply a function of living. How else are you going to get there, how else are you going to entertain yourself?
Remember, the Bushmen of Namibia were known to persue zebras for over 6hrs on foot. Similar cases exist about the Navajo and chasing the pronghorn.
2hrs a day seems like a lot in Western society because we've got school or work from 8am-5pm or whatever, and then have other chores we need to do before we go home and watch TV. We have to work the running into a schedule that's already set.
With societies that lack electricity and that type of organization, how hard is it to spend 2hrs a day, on your feet, running around? It's not a lot of time.
As far as strengthening the feet, I don't know what program would be as effective -- weights represent the problem of training to imitate the natural motion that is desired to be improved, and risk things such as muscle imbalances. It seems far easier and more logical to just use your body weight as a counterbalance and do the running. Very Lydiard-esque. Another big minimalist who believed that running on mattresses served no good purpose to the serious athlete, and never had a runner with a training related lower leg or foot injury.
