A lot of respect has to go to Mills for that race. He took it on from the front with three laps to go and made it a hard run for home when others were happy to let it drift and come down to a kick. A 59 penultimate lap is pretty great running
And got the NR while doing it. Definitely deserves some credit for all the good times.
Man I really thought he was about to take it there too. Was running really smoothly and then I saw the 3:49 miler winding up on the back straight and knew he would take it
I know this sounds stupid, but it’s not a guarantee that Jakob could do what Nico just did after running all the rounds of the 1500. Nico is a real contender to win, he closed in 1:54 flat-1:53 high in a 12:45 race.
Okay I know this result is exciting for Nico but Jakob closed a 7:17 3000m in 1:53.x low. Before we talk about Nico winning world champs we should focus on him winning USAs and medalling at Worlds.

Maybe, but it's not any better than Gebriwhet running 12:36 last year and then not even medalling. Or Aregawi closing a 12:40 in similar splits. Jakob is still a level ahead.
Aregawi didn't run the 5,000m in Paris. Jakob was healthy from late February through Paris last year. This year he is injured for much of May and just getting back in June.
Gebrhiwet ran an idiotic race, and also said he had COVID in Paris.

Nobody has mentioned this but Mehary and Kuma Girma, two teens were right behind Nico and ran 12:45-12:46. Impressive, but do you really think those two are challenging Jakob? We need some relative comparisons here. You American fanboys are ridiculous

Jakob is injured. He is not currently the favorite.
Yeah, remember that Grant Fisher has been better than ever this year too. I'm not even sure who would win USAs at this point. Pulling out from GST makes me slightly nervous but it sounds like it was only a mild injury.

I was referring to Aregawi's 12:40 from 2023. He ran Worlds that year. So did Kejelcha who also ran 12:40. And Gebriwhet, who also ran 12:41? Can we chill? Jakob is the favorite, Young and Fisher are a great pick for 2-3

He should focus on advancing from USA's with as little energy as needed
Jakob is at an advantage (like Sifan Hassan) in that he competes for a relatively weak country

I think most people are excited about Nico contending for a medal period. Girma and Mehary are medal contenders in Tokyo absolutely. You realize last year the top 4 had Lobalu (beaten badly here despite PBing), Fisher (doubling back), Kwemoi (lol).
"For Stewy 2022 did not go to plan. He was diagnosed with pericarditis – inflammation around the heart, after getting a Vaccine booster too soon after having COVID."

Yeah, that's why he did it. He sacrificed any shot at the win because the record meant more in this race. I'm sure he'd have loved to hold on for the win as well, but he had a decision to make once it was clear that everyone else was taking their foot off the gas. I can't say I'm his biggest fan, but massive respect for the way he did that tonight. And good that the UK record is now respectable. 12:53 was a bit of a joke in the modern era

Just because the Ethiopians don’t peak well, doesn’t mean that Nico won’t either. Time and time again the Ethiopian’s race splits have been much better early/mid season vs in the actual championship races. Most of them also have worse leg speed than Nico, meaning he should be able to close better than most in a championship style race (also just look at how he closed that GST 3000, he’s got insane wheels this year). That being said Jakob is still the favorite, but he’s going to have to really work for it to win.
Really exciting that with Young we have someone who can potentially have a great battle with Fisher at USAs in both the 10 and the 5 (and Blanks could make it interesting in the 10 too if he doesn't let it come down to a kick). Since last summer it's looked like Fisher has been on another level than anyone else in the US, but at least based on this one race Young looks like he could give Fisher a real race.
