I don't care about this back and forth between Larson and Power. I'm here to change the narrative with my championship picks.
There is so much intrigue heading into Friday. Is Gabe healthy? Has the increased mileage toasted Lelinga? Can the Future live up to his hype? Will Lars & Calvin try to do every distance event again? Will one more week of training put Tommy Allen astride the MIAC? Stay tuned!
On to the picks!
600 - Power's seeding makes this a lot less exciting, but I'll say Nelson easily tops Lelinga in the fast heat and Kubicek drops a sub 25 first lap to cook Nemecek. I'll go Nelson, Kubicek, Montreuil on his home track.
800 - While I want to pick Ihrke based off rankes, I think the veteran Tyler Smith wins this one. Moore hasn't run fast since December and Meier is MIA. Lelinga has the talent to win, but I'll say one of the Oles grabs third.
1000 - If Gabe is healthy, he runs away from the field. I think St. Peter and Tommy let Hartney set the pace and drop him in the last lap, but Smith wins it. Four Johnnies in the fast heat will be a great chance for the Johnnies to sneak closer to Bethel in team score.
Mile - The most exciting question is whether Lars/Calvin can push the pace enough to run a National qualifying mark. They'll need to run a MIAC record to do so. If Gabe's healthy, I'll say Calvin, Gabe, and Lars with Hartney/The Future holding off McKee. I don't think the Future has the leg speed to win in a kick, but if it goes out hot, I'm not counting him out.
3000- I cannot wait to see this race. Both Bati and Lars need to run faster to qualify for Nationals, but what will Lars have left in the tank after trying to qualify in the mile the day before. Bati will have the benefit of being able to job the 5K and be relatively fresh. However, his last few 3K's have started out hot and then faded. If Lars does the work early, he'll cook. Will Calvin take the pace for Lars and hold on for third? Turlington could be in the mix, but he hasn't raced in weeks and will have to do something he's never done before to beat Bati in the 5K.
5000m
Will Turlington run? Either way, Bati will likely sit on the pack of Oles and drop them at 4K. On paper, the Oles will score a lot of points here, but I fully expect to see Edwards/McKee in the mix.
DMR - This one is wide open. The Oles set a conference championship record last year and then St. Scholastica ran half a minute faster to set the MIAC all-time record. I don't think the Oles/Saints have that depth this year. I see a scenario where the Cobbers load up in hopes of promoting the win to their recruits. I think the Johnnies will want to win at home though, so I'll St. John's, Concordia, & Mac with the Oles and Gusties close behind.
