As for my opinion on it: it's cringe. What does AP African American studies get you credits for anyway? We just have AP government, AP history, and AP calculus which get you credits for those respective classes. Is African American studies a required college course that you would need credit for?

It can be used as a gen ed - you wouldn't (for example) have to take a required history course, so you could either take one fewer course (freeing up your schedule) and graduate on time or you could take an elective you're actually interested in.

Until there is push back on this kind of nonsense, it will continue. Twitter outrage is not "push back". Its white noise. Protesting in person (peacefully, violence is never the answer) is pushback. VOTING is push back.

Desantis, Trump etc continually push, push, push. That is Trumps whole career. Make ridiculous demands and requests and proclamations non stop. If 1 in 10 sticks, that is ground gained. The other 9/10 don't matter. Stiff 10 contractors, if 1 walks away that's a huge win. That is the *whole strategy*. WAKE UP!!!!!!!!!

Black Americans: Desantis just told you that your history isn't worth a class. Ball is in your court. Accept it or push back.

If students disagree...they have the option not to take the class......but why the need for the government to intervene and forcible ban them? Absolutely ridiculous.

There's a huge leap from personally thinking something isn't the best course to take to outright banning it so no one can take it. Entirely different conversation (and motivations)

Do you consider poetry or art a 'productive' class? Do you want to ban that too?

Why not allow the students the freedom to make that choice themselves?

Has anybody made the distinction between African American History and African American Studies? The "studies" distinction is important. It often comes with overt political baggage, and that's the grounds for some of the objections you're seeing. It's easy to dismiss all of this as racism, but as I mentioned before, theories such as CRT are not simply about acknowledging the history of racism. They are calling for revolution, quite literally.

Some people are stuck in the democrats vs. republications conflict and cannot see the more fundamental conflict between people who support political liberalism, viewing it as the best, as of yet, basis for a free and prosperous society, and anti-liberals/illiberals, who view the West as inherent wicked and sinful.

If you look at the class curriculum, you'll see in Unit 4 that the class veers away from black history and into critical theorist political ideology, which is a factually untrue and tribally divisive ideology. That's why Florida chose to not have this class publicly funded. It's not about sending the message to black people that they have no value as you put it.
