do you know my ethnicity? one of my grandparents is from North Africa (think Tunisia, Morocco, etc) so I can say, completely factually correctly, that I'm African American.
The other 3 are "generic" (Americans descended from a mix of European ethnicities) whites, but that doesn't take away from the fact that I'm African American and you're not
I guess i was wrong. This appears to me at this point to be a pure psycho. Hoping to grab some women and get her ATM money. She fought like hell and he probably bashed her head in trying to subdue her. I don't think this was some ransom or husband thing at this point but I could wrong.
I've always heard particularly for women, "If they try to put you in a car, fighit like hell. Fight to death." Id like to get the detials of the case when he was just 16 with the attorney. If he let him live, might have done so here but normally I think fighting to the death is the right call.
My husband suspicion alarm is firing like crazy, the husband being most commonly responsible in such cases, so here’s my conjecture:
I suspect she already had a nontrivial share of her family company transferred to her name, but she being who she is (seemingly at least) preferred to not monetize that share and choosing instead to continue her modest life as a JKG teacher, but the husband figured that he would be the automatic beneficiary of her assets if she died.
Anyone else can only have a ransom motivation that doesn’t appear to be the case, and if she didn’t already have her share of the company in her name, it would make no sense for the husband to want her dead.
IF she has equity in the family business, which is private, then the shareholders' agreement will very likely forbid the "public" sale (liquidation) of her shares buy the husband. But, since she is a teacher and not working in the business, why exactly would she be given equity in the parents' business while they are still running it? My parents own dozens of properties, it is their business, but have not given any to me... and why on Earth would they?
You have no idea what you're talking about.
You sound poor and clueless about family wealth, and gratuitously rude.
Well, we now know it doesn't seem to be a hit but random and the perp was caught. As far as police, they need to be backed on every level. We can't defund the police (and when poll numbers go down decide to fund the police 😒) and expect good results.
I hope for her safe return, which seems very unlikely. You can't claim you know what happened here. However, in general, it is insane to go out running at 4:20 a.m. in that part of Memphis. Not too many cities are safe at that hour. And pretty much none of them are safe for women to go out jogging at that time.

Many times though when a perp serves time after permitting a witness to survive they do not make that “mistake” again.
Reading the comments on the Fox News story - just about everyone is telling women to run with a gun??? I have enough difficulty with hand held mace. If the attacker comes from behind - what use is a gun? Don't think this will end well. Sherry Arnold (also a teacher) had the same thing happen to her in 2012. She was murdered.
There’s literally nothing to be learned from this. It’s not the woman’s fault in any way, and it’s unlikely that she would be able to have done much to prevent it. Maybe pepper spray, but running with a gun is absurd and dangerous. Running at 4:20 am should not be dangerous.
It’s not a common enough occurrence to modify your behavior in a way that’s effective. It will probably terrify a lot of people who are in no real danger and not really prevent any crime. But it will cause anxiety and suspicion.
This is why things like this are even more upsetting than the ‘usual’ tragedies that you see in the news. I really hope there’s some way that she comes out of this.
Does it have to be common to do something different? To take proper precautions? Criminals these days don't have boundary lines or rules they adhere to so it doesn't matter where crimes usually happen or how often. This was either planned or a crime of opportunity. She shouldn't be blamed but using wisdom and common sense doesn't hurt anyone. Running at that hour, alone, same route, no deviations was not wise. Shouldn't be dangerous but it is. Reality is reality. If others have decided like yourself that there is nothing to be learned from this, I guess you have decided to accept whatever consequences might occur.

Actually. He has it exactly right. If she isn't active in the business, then it's extremely unlikely she owns stock in the company. She may inherit the stock as a relative, but it's extremely unlikely her husband is a beneficiary. Her death would get him nothing, other than the marital assets they shared. And those are probably minimal.

I’m uninterested in continuing this particular sub-topic. Come back when you’ve actually run a business and have been a part of and/or reviewed a variety of corporate shareholder agreements in closely held businesses.

If you were to do a risk analysis of your everyday life, I think you’d be shocked at what you’re actually in danger from/of. Most people don’t really have the inclination or ability to do this, so they use media reports as a proxy for what is ‘likely’ and they act accordingly. The fact is, the odds of something like this occurring are incredibly low and there is nothing that you could do short of being in a constant state of sympathetic arousal to try and prevent yourself from being a victim. Even then you might be vulnerable because your attention is misplaced. The effect of this constant vigilance takes a toll emotionally and physically and it does little to prevent or avert attacks like this that are essentially one-off.
That being said, because this is so rare it is widely reported and consumed. Go ahead and blame her for being out running at 4:30 am if it makes you feel better, but I won’t. The truth is that we’re all incredibly vulnerable at times and it is only the fact that this type of event is exceedingly rare that protects us.
Finally, I’ll quote the great poet Michael Tyson who said “Everybody’s got a plan until they get punched in the fVcking mouth.” All you morons who are talking about what you ‘would of’ done if you had a gun are deluded. You’ve probably never been in a physical altercation in your life. It’s one thing to carry a 25 to scare off some overly friendly wildlife and it is an entirely different thing to draw from a holster, release the safety, and fire while under attack from a physically superior foe. It’s not like you can run around holding the firearm and pop off at anyone who you feel threatened by. Life is not experienced in battle royale mode.
The truth is anyone who is married and has a firearm is in much greater danger of having it used against them by a loved one than they are to be attacked like this. Think on that for a moment.

The second paragraph is completely true. I’m a 38 year old mom and runner and that is what has always been told and conveyed to me throughout college and beyond- if someone tries to abduct you, fight outside the car till death… because odds are, if they get you inside the car/- you are dead anyway. Your odds of surviving are much higher by creating a scene, resisting, making noise, and fighting all out outside the car.

Taking precautions is the sensible thing to do even if the risk is small. Saying that “running at 4:20am should not be dangerous” does not make it not dangerous in many places.

I think you’re basically right here, but personally I’m up in the air about whether the abduction was money driven this time. Given the victim’s profile and that she was out running (and therefore probably not carrying any $ or cards) I suspect that it was a premeditated rape. Whether murder was always part of his plan or not is unknowable at this point.
Anyone still insisting the husband must be involved, that it was a contract job or that it had anything to do with her family’s business are falling to irrational skepticism. One of my disgusting dirty pleasures is watching true crime videos and serial killer documentaries. Sadly, the story of a kidnapper/mugger/rapist being locked up for 20 years only to commit something even more vile shortly after release happens over and over again.
While I would like to join in praying for her safe return, it seems more realistic to pray she can Rest In Peace.
Really sad story that seems like it will not have a good outcome.
I don’t care what color the perpetrator or the victim are, but it does bother me that CNN doesn’t show the picture gratuitously if it doesn’t fit their narrative. Fox News does the same in reverse. Just report the news and keep the opinions for Twitter and message boards.
4:20 is a bit early to be running in an urban area, but I’ve only been to Memphis once, so hard for me to say how risky it is.
I can’t imagine what the husband and family are going through.
