Ok so stimulants are illegal in competition UNLESS you admit you are taking stimulants and get permission to take said stimulants.
in this particular case, you are being admirable because of your transparency. It doesn’t matter anymore that you are gaining an advantage through pharmaceuticals. That’s ok now.
do I have this right?
One more reason I can’t be a real track fan anymore. This is just too stupid. Doesn’t pass the giggle test.
Exactly. This is classic Letsrun hypocrisy all in one thread.
And imagine if instead of Molly Seidel the athlete was Galen Rupp or an NOP athlete or an East African…the same people who are applauding her would be calling them cheaters.
The older I get, the more amazed I am at most peoples inability to objectively assess things. Like, I absolutely love sports, I love running - I love it in my life. BUT there is literally no professional athlete/team alive who would break my heart if they cheated or got caught cheating or left the sport today. None. Disappointed maybe, but just for a few minutes. Another great one will just come along soon and the show goes on and they aren’t my friend or loved one.
So, people’s flimsy emotional attachment to liking certain athletes or teams and assuming they are good or bad people with no supporting evidence or experience is insane to me.
Fair. Enough.
I changed my perspective on things like this after Shelby. I will admit I was blindsided and "believed" runners who I liked.
I believe that the transparency helps see the fuller picture, and Molly has been open and consistent with her mental health struggles (OCD). However, should she be approved for a TUE? Time will tell for that.
I am not for excluding people, but in order to keep the sport fair at the highest levels, there are some drugs that aren't allowed and you can't be getting TUE's at the drop of a hat. What's so frustrating about Galen's case for example, is that he has these TUE's for some pretty hard core asthma and thyroid medication--medication that would indicate that if someone was on it and really needed it, then maybe training at an elite level might not be something their body should even be doing...
Does she explain why she needs Adderall? I thought it was for concentrating on paperwork and reading boring stuff. Does she have a desk job on the side?

Galen does not have a TUE for thyroid meds. Nobody does. Thyroid meds don't require a TUE.
I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a TUE for asthma meds either. IIRC, he's on Advair, which doesn't require a TUE as long as you limit your use to 1-2 puffs 1-2 times a day.

So you know you have limited/no knowledge about this, but that doesn't stop you from spewing your lack of knowledge and do a quick google search to find out.
What most of you are getting wrong is that for a person with TRUE adhd, this medication is effective and improves one’s overall quality of life whereas if this medication is taken without actually having adhd it can be detrimental and decrease your quality of life. You really can not compare the two… if she is truly adhd and suffering on thst front, this medication is relieving for her and can help her lead a semi normal lifez
quick question: Why are stimulants banned for use among athletes in competition?
and then part 2: why is it fair for Molly to gain legal use of a banned stimulant in competition?

The same goes for other drugs.
You are absolutely correct. Some of these drugs are so powerful that if you need them you should be focusing on your health - not athletics. If you need the TUE you really should be well in therepy. Maybe a short term exemption should be allowed in some cases while you are not competing and getting healthy but certainly long term this absolutely shouldnt be allowed while competing.
Saw this story play out at my childs hgh school, to very bad consequences.
It's worth noting that "stimulants" are not stimulants for people with ADHD. It just brings the dopamine levels back within range.
this triggers my BS detector.
Any medical types here want to give a thumbs up or down on this? Esp considering the non-binary nature of an ADHD diagnosis?
Not a medical type, but I do have ADHD. Lots of people will recognize that stimulants have a weird affect on people with adhd. They settle me down hard. Individuals are individual though.
Also, I think it’s worth considering that while Adderall may be performance enhancing for some disciplines, I don’t think an elevated heart rate or obfuscated perception of effort are good for the marathon. I specifically try to run BEFORE taking my meds every day.

A professional athlete competes for a paycheck.
How many HR Departments are going to give their employee a TUE for Adderall.
All standards should be uniform.
As an important addendum, in light of this situation and a TUE, Sha'Carri should probably have been given a TUE in light of her situation because all premises accepted, she was using cannabis therapeutically. If we support mental wholeness for Ms. Seidel, we kind of have to for Ms. Richardson

A lot of people have mentioned the marathon distance in this thread. Perhaps there needs to be a reminder that she is a distance runner and races distances shorter than marathons more often than she races the marathon. She's skipping a 10K at the moment.
I think general consensus is that this TUE should not be granted. She might actually need it and it might be really beneficial to her from a day-to-day standpoint, but it's a steroid ultimately and unfair for her to be competing with it in her system.

100% true. Sha'Carri and all other athletes who use cannabis should stop being punished for it.

Adderall technically increases your dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine levels.
People who have ADHD generally find it difficult to produce these chemicals when focusing on a singular task and require outside stimulants to "feed" the brain and seek happiness. Other people are able to produce these chemicals at a low level enough to get them through a task. No one wants to study for a biology exam, but many people are able to produce positive emotions throughout the task (i.e. if I can pass this test, I can graduate, which will produce happiness).
People with "ADHD" will typically find this difficult and require a "kick" or dopamine and serotonin to produce a feeling of happiness/optimism to complete mundane but necessary tasks.
The problem is over time, the more you "hijack" your dopamine receptors, they begin to dull and you require more and more of the drug to produce the same effect, and most people will increase their dosage continuously, hence an addiction.
Adderall is a schedule 2 controlled substance -- meaning it has a high-risk for addiction.

Adderall is considered a Schedule 2 Controlled substance. There is no possible way this will be granted. It's considered the same class of drugs as cocaine, oxycontin, fentanyl, and morphine. I'm fairly sure it's banned in every major sports league. I'm surprised this is being debated so heavily.
