If we were actually following the data and science and weren't selfish, we wouldn't allow Cole Hocker to get vaccinated now

I don't think he is going to harm anyone but it just seems like a no brainer at this point to get vaccinated. If he had gotten vaccinated you wouldn't be doing such riveting journalistic work like you are now.

Testing does not protect from the virus. If testing was sufficient, we would not have developed vaccines.

The event has 1000s of people from 100s of countries traveling to one place. Olympians will smash (cardboard beds or not). The village is a global bodily-fluids swapping orgy, mixing juices from around the world, literaly. A petridish for viral diseases, textbook example of a super spreader event waiting to happen.

A previous covid infection still requires 1 shot to achieve an OK immune response. Especially considering delta. That statement is the opposite of "following the data and the science".

The euro correlates to the onset of the current wave washing over europe. Depending on how things play out in Japan, the event has the potential to also contribute to the spread of the virus worldwide. People showing up not yet vaccinated contributes to the problem.

You had 3 points, none hold up to scrutiny, 1 and 2 are classic antivax rhetoric, debunked ad nauseam in all sorts of media, #3 is a whataboutism. If he could have gotten vaccinated but didnt, showing up to the games un-vaccinated is irresponsible and part of the problem. Championing that behavior also is irresponsible and part of the problem.

#2: Vaccination rates in the US are topping out because of lack of interest, not lack of access. There is not this breadline of elderly waiting for vaccines in the US because young people are hogging them. It is a mix of young and old who are refusing the vaccine.

#3: The vaccines ordered for the US are staying in the US. We aren't going to ship vaccines to the world elderly because our domestic young are refusing them.

Rojo usually I like you and your articles but you’re being moronic. Cole Hocker declining a vaccine doesn’t get it sent to India or any other country. It just gets wasted and thrown out.

Because of this, all young people in the US should get vaccinated, because the vaccines are available and will will be wasted otherwise and getting the vaccines is important because new variants develop due to spreading in UNVACCINATED INDIVIDUALS. Covid spreads much less and therefore less chance of a mutation and new more dangerous variant in vaccinated people. For the overall safety of the world to prevent new variants yes the young healthy Americans should get vaccinated.

Making a blanket statement that they aren’t FDA approved but ignoring that they have been granted EUA by the FDA is really misleading. Pfizer is getting priority review now and looks like Jan 2022 is the timeframe.

Delta has been circulating in the world, first in India, since the end of 2020 and has been in the news for many months. Other highly contagious variants emerged before delta and wreaked havoc in places like Brazil. The only hope to suppress these variants is vaccination, especially in those likely to spread the disease, such as healthy young adults. I’m not calling Hocker names, and I don’t know the timeline of when he could have obtained the vaccine and his competitive season. However, if his successful peers managed to get vaccinated, say Fisher or Nuguse, Hocker should have gotten it too. I’m sure he is a nice smart person, but to decline vaccination was a mistake by him or those advising him. It put himself and those around him at risk.

I think the people claiming this are the unintelligent and selfish ones and there is no real scientific basis for their nasty forceful demands. There is no reason for Hocker to get vaccinated unless he is nervous about covid; it seems he has chosen to get over the fear of a rare event to keep vaccines for those where severe illness is not as rare. Emergency approval is not the same. It hasn't gone through long term testing, so anyone who says, "I took the vaccine. I'm fine. The only thing that negates the argument is long term testing. Why not just provide people with different vaccine options, more time tested options. Why does the Olympic team have to take the mRNA vaccine? Just because the FDA and government officials are bought off by pfizer does not give the fast tracking credibility. They are taking an sizable risk with a large population.
