So to you the tables suggest that Cheptegei should be equal to running two of Herb's world record race back to back. It also works out as Cheptegei's projected 1500 splits being just over 2 seconds slower than Ryun's 1967 world record for the 1500. Times have certainly moved on - in every sense. That you think this could be done naturally by Cheptegei shows how far detached from reality you are. But we knew that.

I don't know if anybody has already mentioned this- but Cheptegei won the 2019 Prefontaine 2-mile against strong competition, so clearly he is able to execute in a 3000m type race. With his world records, Mcsewyn pacing and wavelight technology, I say he gets under 7:20.

Cheptegei IS 3 times the athlete Ryun was. You do realise Cheptegei beat crazy records by Bekele? What do you think is worth more, a 3:38 on a cinder track or 12:35 on a synthetic one? You do realise 12:35 is about 20 seconds faster than any American has ever run?

The meeting record is 7:31.66 by Caleb Ndiku in 2014. I hope he totally smashes that, or this will seem like a big letdown.

The 10,000m meet record is 26:20, Bekele’s first WR. Any chance Jacob Kiplimo steals the headlines? 10k starts at 9:10 a.m. U.S. Central time tomorrow.

Cheptegei has proven he can hold a pace like clockwork. He was able to run 60.4 second laps for 12 1/2 laps, and didn't even look tired at the end. The question now is if he can hold a pace 1.7 seconds faster per lap for 7.5 laps.

The biggest question about Cheptegei is whether or not he has the raw speed to do it. He's never really taken a real crack at the 1500m. Komen was a 3:29 1500m runner.

But when you phrase the question as I did above it seems like a no brainer. Add in the fact that he'll benefit from super spikes, and pacing lights, I fully believe that if he's in the same shape that he was for his 5000m world record he can get it.

Of course, whether or not he's in that shape now is unknown. I simply have a sneaking suspicion that he won't quite be at his best with the olympics in under 2 months.

So if that's true, then I wonder if the wavelight will be set at something like 7:30 instead of 7:20? Attack on world record now seems like a premature statement.

This is a fair, lowering the pre-race expectations. 7:20 has usually been cited on LR as the toughest men's track record, at least before Cheptegei's 5000 and 10000 WRs. Without the new spikes, I'd have put him in the same mid-7:20s range as Bekele and Gebrselassie, but the new spikes are worth about 5 seconds, so that would put him within range.

It should be remembered that Komen was a 3:34 runner before running 7:20. He didn't run 3:29 until the following year. If the World Athletics site is update, Cheptegei has only raced three 1500s in nine seasons, since he's become an elite runner, so of course 3:37 is soft.

Cheptegei has done what facts and logic are unable to do to posters on this board. He has indicated that the wr is not on and that it is not a soft record.

Yes but I already pointed out in this thread that Daniel ran that 3:34 just 2 days after a 12:45 so it is not representative of what he could do fresh.
