LRC Note. This thread was started before it was known if Cheptegei would be going for the WR. The initial title was "Joshua Cheptegei to attempt Daniel Komen's 3km WR??" We changed it at 8:10 pm ET on 5/17/2021.
New video from TotalRunningProductions. Rumors going around that Cheptegei, 5000 and 10000 meter world record holder will go after Daniel Komen's 25-year old 3000 meter world record time of 7:20.67. Will he be able to do it?
Will he use Dragonflys/supershoes?
He has no chance. Remember this guy ran 3:37 the other week. He might get the meet record at Ostrava of 7:31.66.

I need to know more. I never understood that he was going for the world record here. Has that been confirmed? Remember there are runners better than him who could not get 7:20. Yeah I think 7:26 is fine for an over/ under but I would be surprised if he runs faster than 7:28.
Personally, I think the shoes and pacing lights are more prominent than training. If anything will get him under, it will be those deciding factors. Times are dropping...

In the video, it is stated that these are rumors which are floating around. Not confirmed.
I never understood the phenomenon "Joshua Cheptegei ".
That owner of the channel seems a big fan of him and Eliud Kipchoge while ignoring anything about Sifan Hassan (he still didn't swallow her half-marathon WR last year).
Hold on a second. The title of the video says this record is UNBEATABLE yet it also says one man can break it? Only one of those things can be true.
I feel similar. I try to follow a variety of running channels so I can stay up-to-date on running news. There is definite bias on this channel, but often informs me on running news. Often with a speculative insight.
I saw this as an oxymoron of sorts. It’s typical for a clickable title nowadays on YouTube.

fair enough, I just think there's no point in reading too much into a 1500m tuneup.
I don't doubt him going for the WR, he's opened up pretty fast before. But I wouldn't expect anything in the low 7:20s, I think 7:26-7 is a fair time.
Of course this is all dependent on good pacing, but NN usually has good runners for Cheptegei
