I know for a fact that Coach Simmons allows the Army guys to join in on his workouts with his ADP athletes in Colorado Springs. Coach Simmons loves to coach and does it for free. He has no contract with his ADP athletes other than an agreement that they are not doping (which they agree to at the beginning of the coach/athlete relationship). But Coach Simmons does not receive money from his athletes. He runs a non-profit: American Distance Project.
He is doing ALL his coaching pro-bono. It's not exactly a smart business move, but neither was his Greenman Taproom. He's got great coaching ideas, and he's been doing it a long time, however I think his reputation proceeds him. As many before me have noted, he is a bit of a snake-oil salesman who believes in altitude training and his own pyramid training program that is his own creation. He hawks his book, dvd's, and training camps for coaches and athletes in order to fund his travels. Elevated-Sports is a consultant business he started not long ago to help train coaches. He's trying to make money by being a coach, but why he doesn't ask his athletes for a percentage of their winnings or even a monthly fee to work out with him, I have no explanation.
I don't think his athletes are Olympic medal winners, he's done just fine as a college coach, and probably earned more when he worked for a university or college.
He's in the process of writing another book, and I heard he's thinking about getting a Ph.D. as well as interviewing for various college jobs. He seems pretty undecided and directionless. It will be interesting to see what he does post Olympics.
