I've heard the "foreigners taking American jobs" argument.
I've heard "You can't just stick varsity players in a JV game just to win. It's not fair to the JV players"
"They are taking the easy way out to make an Olympic team" (Used against American runners as well)
Which is it? if any
I thought it was just general xenophobia/racism until I heard the last argument.
Someone said to me "3 Kenyans will be selected per event for Rio. What if the next 15 in each event, who are likely top 3 for any other country, became citizens of other countries just to make a team. We would have an overwhelmingly Kenyan 800-Marathon. Today, had Chris Derrick not petitioned to be in the 10k he would not have taken 5th place. He did not qualify for the race yet he is still allowed to place and that's not fair. This is the same argument I have for Kenyan runners competing for other countries"
