Truth,
I am (nearly) at a loss for words here. I can't think of a more ridiculous dialogue than the one you are engaged in right now.
On one hand you say you have nothing against Lydiard, yet you really need to share with us how he lied, exaggerated and you take the time to put him in his place in regards to whether he coached someone.
Now putting aside sarcasm in regards to your weak command of the English language, let me say that I think 'Coach' perhaps has a different meaning to you in Finnish?? Is this possible?? Is the Finnish word for 'Coach' more meaningful?
For example: In English I can coach someone myself a small amount and if so then I have 'coached them', but whether I quantify the relationship is another thing, it requires explanation, like: "I went out to coach the athlete one morning, on their form." THAT is coaching a little.
Or I could say I coached an athlete once-per-month, but they have a day-to-day coach. Now I can say I coached them once-per-month because perhaps, I may know some things that the regular coach doesn't understand or doesn't practice....semantics?? Almost??
So when Lydiard 'coached' Viren, he 'indirectly' coached Viren, by coaching his coach. And perhaps he personally suggested to his coach and to Viren that Viren add a little pace to one run and a little distance to another run...this is coaching. IT IS NOT meaning he was his 'main' coach. In Finnish when you say the Finnish word for coaching or coach, is it absolute?
Please answer without freaking out, maybe some understanding will happen here.
Also, NobbyH is very well known by people in the running community. He is arguably the most knowledgable person on the planet of the Lydiard method, he even lived with him for a year. NobbyH is the co-founder of the Lydiard Foundation. I brought them here once for a weekend training thing and let me tell you, he knows a hell of a lot, he is an amazing resource. Why don't you ask him some questions, perhaps he can help you gain some understanding.
Anyway, NobbyH is not hiding, he has linked his email address. He is well known as Nobuya 'Nobby' Hashizume.
Here you have talked to people who knew Lydiard like HRE, Nobby and others and HRE raced against Viren and he also spent time with Lydiard on a tour. Perhaps they know a heck of a lot more than you give them credit for.
I just spent time today with another successful Lydiard method athlete, Rod Dixon, a great Kiwi who won the NYC marathon, bronze in world cross, bronze 1500m Olympics, we talked about his good friend and fellow Kiwi Lorraine Moller who was a 4 x Olympian. She has an article in the latest Running Times Magazine, it sits here right beside me. In it she wrote the article 'The Essential Lydiard' it a fantastic peice on the man who directly coached neither of these two great Olympians, but they trained using his principles.
I have interviewed these two people and about 6 or 8 others who knew Lydiard or used his practises. As far as anyone is concerned Lydiard's method is there for everyone to understand, as he shared it freely or nearly freely with everyone. There are so many interviews, books and people who know the method well and can continue to share it, that he is still 'coaching' people now and perhaps forever.
Am I lying or exaggerating? A kindler, gentler way of describing what I said is speaking perhaps in metaphor?
Remember coaching is both a science and an art. Good luck interpreting what I wrote here.
