Alan Webb... It might be over.

some posters have suggest getting blood work done. this would probably be a safe bet, can't lose anything from doing it. because, as silly as it is, the whole thing with the hair could have to do with his hormones fluctuating in an unhealthy way. if there is something wrong with the way his hormones are functioning, i could see how that could play a significant role in his training, recovering, and overall performance. didn't rupp have some kind of gland issue? maybe webb has something like that but raczko is just to green to pick up on it?

The problem with the mods, if we can't talk or discuss the issues (drugs???, poor performances, etc) here what is the real sense of posting? I thought this was place once described as the wild west of running web sites?

First of all, forums like this tend to get out of control. I realize we all have opinions, but they some how tend to get a little overbearing. Second, I am not sure if it was really allan webb that replied to the posts. I don';t know about you, but if it were me I would not be even looking at a bunch of posts about me in a forum such as this, let alone respond. That just isn't very smart. Maybe that is where the problem lies. He is a gifted runner, but unfortunatley, when you put even the best American Milers of all time in a race, if he made the field, I am not sure he would even have the slighest chance to win. American record or not, he has proven to be a time trial runner and not a racer. If you ask me, a runner with his talent he should be focusing more of his efforts on racing and less on running fast.

So your saying he should stop running fast. Well he did that and now hes horrible.

The purpose of my comment was not to make an argument related to the OP's subject. I could care less about Alan Webb. It was to make fun of your lack of basic education. :)

Oh, right - I forgot that spelling doesn't count when it comes to usernames.

It's really transparent when someone who can't spell uses excuses like, "It was a username" or "This isn't an English test." So, I guess because this isn't a math test, there's nothing wrong with me typing 2+2=5, right? I mean, if it was a math test, I would certainly know better.... *wink* :)

His username is supposed to mean "hates peaches." It's actually kinda clever.

I don't mean to defend the guy - he was an idiot in his first post. But his handle obviously went right over your head.

In a recent Steve Scott interview, he thought that the problem was over training, and that the solution was 1 to 6 to 12 months of rest.

He's already done that and it didn't work.

I'm just wondering why a) no one seemed to know about this injury when it supposedly happened, and b) why was no one noticing the effects? (I think there was a report that one or more competitors saw him training / warming up / working out & didn't notice anything.)

Seriously, if his heart just isn't in it anymore, he should do a gut check and ask himself if he wants to do this for 3 more years to get a shot at 2012. Won't he be 29-30 by then? Most of the quick guys (himself included) peak earlier (don't ask me about Lagat - the guy's a freak! An amazing freak, but still a freak!)

Kinda sad. I support the guy & think he's in a rut with Razz-a-ma-Spazz / Spazzz-co. Why in the name of God a world-class talent is being trained by a high-school coach, I'll never know.

Full disclosure: I ran for Vin at Dartmouth... I had a good HS coach, but Lanana took me to another level. The point is this: the importance of a coach & strong training partners/environment is HUGE!

At best he is in the upper half of the 10 all-time best US miler list. Mel Shepard and Cummingham were much better in their day. In fact Jim Spivey was also more consistent.

Ryun and Scott are so far ahead it is laughable. However, I would rate Webb better than Holman, Byers, and Falcon.

Webb did great the following year after building a great base for the 10k. That year was destroyed by appendicitis(?) and maybe some other stuff, but the following year, he had turned to speed training and it was the right time for it. I'd even add another example, Steve Scherer. He trained with Nick Willis and didn't like all the hard long runs. So, he goes out to California, does speed training, and runs something like 3:56 right off the bat indoors. The rest of the year he doesn't improve much and the following year, he's really no better. He didn't realize that training long distance with Willis set up his big improvement with speed training. It's a dialectic. You need both to make the leap, but you can't have both at the same time, so you do the one for a while and then build the other, whichever is your weakness.

And to the point that I've heard a lot that Webb was a one hit wonder, he won multiple national championships and ran at the very least the following set of miles and 1500's:

3:53 (hs), 3:51 (April), 3:50 (Pre--tremendous confidence in that race, like the pace setters were just for him), 3:48 high (London?), 3:50 (elsewhere?), 3:46, 3:32, 3:30.

Incidentally, Ritz also ran his pr (13:16) at that Brasschaatt meet in '07.
