78 runners ran Nuttycombe today that ran Gans last month and their time averaged 37 seconds slower. Ignoring some obvious blowups put the average at 31. Consistent with last year about 30 seconds slower at Wisconsin. That would put NC St at 19:00, 19:05, 19:20, 19:27, 19:40. Today BYU was 18:42, 19:09, 19:41, 1945, 19:46. Presumably Hutchins would be down around 19:00-19:10. That would still put NC St with 5 before BYU 4th. Somewhat quick and simplistic - but the course to course time is pretty consistent and consistent with comments made by coaches. I am sure there will be downvotes, but provide data to contradict this. but as noted the dropoff to NC St 6 today was large.

The Notre Dame women were glossed over by the pundits but this was a very strong showing. Incredible result and not at all surprising based on recent performances.

I've just learned to be very conservative with freshmen. Still a long way to nationals, but quite an exciting start

Also top 5 ncaa women are all sub 15:00 equivalent, so individual race should still be very competitive.

Pat Shane was BYU’s coach during 1995-2003. But he was also the coach from 2006-2015.

If you want a blueprint of how to completely wreck a program, do what coach Shane did. By the time he was forced out, BYU was known as "the place where state champions go to die".

All you have to do is starve all of your female athletes into chronic, deep calorie deficits and train them into the ground.

Who can even mix it up with them, Rocky Hansen, Gary Martain, Marco Langdon? These results don't include Oklahoma State or Iowa State's top runners

Two of those guys are 26:50 guys…think about that…there’s not more than 25 people in the world that can compete with that. Someone needs to get some farm teams going in Minneapolis to develop some of these young somalians that are everywhere here.

Interesting that there were a number of true freshmen who scored for elite teams: Englehardt for NC State, Thomsen for Stanford, Huyler for Notre Dame and Walter for Furman. A bit unusual for freshmen to have instant impact at this level.

BYU is not as strong in the top-3 but their depth is ridiculous. There was only 21 seconds separating their #3 from their #8, and they did not run Hutchins or Lovell. Any injuries or illness will be easily replaced with virtually no negative effect. And we have yet to see what Hutchins can do.
well the question for nc state is whether the fairly tight pack of their runners at Chicago was a fluke. Today was not good for the 5 to 6 spread. Michalak and Englehardt's times today were 10-15 seconds slower than Chicago, while Rauber and Putman were 50 seconds slower. Rauber was 37 seconds faster at Nationals last year vs today and actually was just ahead of Englehardt at Chicago..

Rauber had an off day today, obviously. She'll be better. Gapes also had an off day but she was already a low stick so moving up a few wouldn't have made a huge difference in the score. Templier, if she runs, can also be a difference maker.

lol was Putman not the key a couple of weeks ago? As long as Gapes is healthy she will be fine. Hopefully for them that is the case.

I don’t want to call anyone out, but I had Putnam pegged as their solid #5 before today. Hartman ran this “firm course” 15secs slower than last year; Gapes was 26secs slower.

Except for their bright light in Napoleon, NC State closes out the regular season staggering and reeling on the ropes, while BYU is licking their chops ready to shock the post-season.

NC State appears like they could use that ‘band treatment’ that the Cougars got last week.

You are probably right in hindsight that Gapes has an off day. My initial thought, however, was that Napoleon and Michalak just ran very well.

If Gapes is #4 and she runs a pr, that's great for Pack as team is better overall.

For past 2 years, Gapes is remarkably consistent, so you can really count on her. Michalak, Putman and Rauber more inconsistent, so for me they are keys to results.

Fortunately, still ACC and Regional to get a feel for these 3-7 runners.

Doesn't work that way in XC. Nice try though.

Both are clearly top tier contenders. Only way to know how they stack up is race head to head.
