That's not at all ironic; it's exactly what one should expect. Running is a great recreational sport, but it's boring to watch. Always has been, always will be.
I'm old enough to remember a Track and Field News cover piece in the 80s saying, "What if they gave a track meet and nobody came?". It was filled with apocalyptic quotes from athletes and coaches about how "omg track is dying!!!'
Almost 40 years later and we're having the exact same discussion. 40 years from now, they'll still be going on. Track isn't going anywhere; it just is what it is.
And that's okay. It doesn't need to be popular.
