I once wrote Vin Lananna an unsolicited email when he was A.D. at Stanford. I was a high level runner in college and had just started coaching high schoolers. I emailed to ask him a simple question about his training regimen when he coached at Stanford. He graciously replied!

Anyway, my one experience interacting with him was more positive than it would have been with most people. I wish him the best.

UCLA’s performance highlighted how little impact SB made last year. The women lost their top runner from last year, didn’t really add anyone of significance and still ran better than they did last year.

The men lost their top 3 runners from last year and showcased the absolutely dismal recruiting class Brosnan left them. They have zero talent on that men’s team with Brosnan’s recruiting. And don’t tell me about all the men who were “going to come” until he got canned. His main recruits still ran this year (Cantu and the Cortes bros), and they missed out on the foreigner 800 guy who wouldn’t have helped in XC.

Lananna was not the Stanford AD. He coached the cross country and track teams (men's and women's).

Vin Lananna was recruiting on of my athletes in HS the first year he got the UVA job. Vin was relentless in calling my athlete and myself. He was cocky on the phone and said negative things about other programs and other coaches. He thought all top HS athletes would drop everyone and everything to run for him.
One thing he needs to learn is not to talk bad about other coaches and programs. It was a huge turn off for my athlete and his family. Personally I wouldn’t want any of my athletes running for someone like that. Especially with his questionable past and current attitude. It wasn’t hard to see right through him.

This and for health reasons. I agree with everyone who says Lananna is a shady character. However he’s in his 70’s in so great health.

That’s not what happened. He did not get booted from Stanford because of manipulating scholarships or any of the other nonsense people are posted here. He wanted desperately to become Stanford AD, they passed him over, he left in protest and went to Oberlin where he was made AD.

10k is beyond Martin’s range. Martin ran a PR in the 800, 1500, and mile this year. And Vin has both his men’s and women’s teams in nationals. On their home course! An exciting experience they’ll remember for the rest of their lives! Yes: congrats to Vin! Keep hating, haters!
