Tuohy is no genius but she is smart. She won't leave college until her eligibility is over because is the proverbial big fish small pond.
What a load of manure! What qualifies you to assess her level of intelligence?
Big fish in a small pond? The team won back to back championships! She's a college student in the NCAA on a winning team.
Few high school girls that were outstanding athletes have been as successful in college. Like Astro said, in this she is an anomoly. She has two individual titles and two team titles and she's only a junior - and that's coming off an injury after high school.
She broke the NCAA mile record after not competing in that distance for three years! She was .7 seconds behind the pro who won.
While she was recovering and building back after her injuries, her popularity never waned. It must have been difficult for her to be patient during that period, but with the help of her coach and teammates it finally is paying off.
This is one of the greatest athletes ever and we're seeing her in real time. That's pretty cool! And she's got a good head. She makes the deans list on a regular basis. Her own choices put her in the situation she wanted to be in with her coach and teammates. I can't see any college athlete who can ask for more.
‘No genius’…’big fish in small pond’
Both statements are rubbish…for an underclassman who has been a top student-athlete since her freshman year and is beating the country’s best consistently as well as some top student-athletes from other lands, who chose to study in the US.
jc9091 is spot on with his other observations.
I was coached by an Olympic silver medalist in middle distances when I was 13/14 years old and living overseas. I was nationally ranked for my age but didn’t have a fraction of the talent that is evident in Tuohy. She’s such a talent that I’m not sure she realized how rare her abilities are. Yes, she works hard but without the natural talent and superior running form she wouldn’t be this far ahead of her other talented competition.

Thanks for this…that the majority where in the 8:50’s doesn’t surprise me. Tuohy is clearly targeting sub-8:50 so I hope she can get to a CR or close to it.
I think the "also rans' are faster this year so 8:40-8:45 pace for them would not surprise me.
Galvan is in the race again, she ran 8:40 in August.

Which would all point to a fast pace that sets up a good chance for a record run. 2:55 for first and second K, ending with a strong 2:50K…yielding a record 8:40…with 2 or 3 pro’s beating that pace.

I can't see this being a slow paced race. I do think Monson will drive 8:30 pace and Cranny will go with her. Galvan and Henes I think would be wise to stay a little off that pace - more like 8:40 pace (maybe a tic below 2:55/k) which would set up well for Tuohy, Orton and others.

10 laps averaging 35’s ending with 5 laps averaging 34’s. Sounds simple but is anything but. This should dictate the type of training regimen to prep for the race. I hope Henes let’s Tuohy push the training runs, even if no one at NC St can keep up…

Perhaps it would be wise to let Tuohy prep with the men’s team for this one?

It's not going to be slow. Monson has run 8:26, 8:31 in 2022. Would not be surprised to see 8:20's here. In the workout video Ritz said she was in 8:20 shape.

Ha Ha it is late for that. NC St has F runners who can do 400s at that pace, or faster, or 800s at that pace. Plenty of training partners - some change with what the workout is.

Last year Galvan hung off the back of the lead pack as long as she could and ended up on her own but with a fast time.
The chase pack formed pretty early, and fell far behind. Tuohy needs to stick with the leaders as long as she can to get a good position
The 8:41.60 NCAA Record by Karissa Schweizer on February 3rd, 2018…. It’s extremely fast. This time is nothing to scoff at. This is an average of 34.73 per 200m lap. A lot of NCAA women can’t even close their FINAL 200m that fast, let alone AVERAGE that….
So, what are the chances Tuohy can break this?
Tuohy averaged 32.815 per lap during her NCAA record setting mile. With the MileSplit conversion calculator showing that equating to an 8:48 3000m potential, that’s 35.2 per lap that Tuohy will have to average. If she does that, she’ll be about #5 all-time NCAA. Her current fitness showing the ability to average 35.2 per lap vs the 34.72 needed to BREAK Schwiezer’s 3000m record is a difference of 0.48 seconds per lap approximately. With the hype at the event, and the level of competition in the race, I believe it’s the perfect opportunity, and Tuohy has the fitness to support that pace.
If Tuohy averages 34.72 per lap, and CLOSES her final lap in 32.0, she’ll come across the finish line in 8:40… A new NCAA record.
So, I think that those talking about an 8:40 for Tuohy are spot-on. Let’s cheer her on!

Tuohy can do it but she can't get stuck with the slow chase pack, she will end up at 8:49.

Agreed. I don’t think she’ll get stuck with that pack. She’ll know based on the 2nd split where she is and make any adjustment necessary from there.

Will Tuohy have the confidence to possibly beat Henes for the first time? Is that awkward, it's her coach's daughter
on the other hand they know each other well, and I wouldn't be surprised if they shared their desired race pace ahead of things. But of course they will compete.

Yeah, I think if anything, it’ll help boost her calmness and comfort.

I’m not so sure. I saw a YouTube with Monson being paced by one of the OAC male runners in a pace that I would guess was in the 31 or 32 range. Would Sam Bush or another 800 runner pace Tuohy? I’m not so sure.
