This was the summer training plan I was handed at UConn. Beth Alford-Sullivan (BAS) didn’t even bother to control-F Tennessee out of it, I’m pretty sure the whole thing was copied straight from her old job. It told us “NONE of you need MASS to run fast”, dismissing strength work beyond core. It recycled the same team goal “qualify for the NCAA Championships”, not exactly a cookie cutter goal you should throw around at every team you coach regardless of level and development. That’s not how you motivate a team: giving a one-size-fits-all plan, no individual training, no goals specific to our program. Instead, the focus all summer felt like it was on weight: “Monitor your caloric intake… arrive at a good racing weight.” Lazy, recycled, and athlete health pushed aside. Beth wants big success but is too lazy to invest in modern training principles for women like lifting and quality nutrition/a training program actually written for the team she’s being paid 250k a year to coach. Yikes.
“Drastic weight shifts (high or low) will be detrimental to your success.”
“Monitor your caloric intake.”
“Arrive at Tennessee at a good racing weight — but healthy. "

I've known Greg Roy for a long time, but obviously haven't kept in touch--if he retired years ago! A good guy.
Double-checking the UConn athletics webpage, I'm interested to see that UConn seems to be one of the few colleges to have eliminated men's cross but kept men's track.21 -

Honestly, this post feels like a cheap shot at Beth Sullivan more than an actual critique of training philosophy. Coaches recycle and adapt training plans all the time, it’s called experience. If something has worked at a high level before, of course pieces of it are going to show up again. That doesn’t mean there’s no thought put into the program.
As for the “Tennessee” references not being swapped to “UConn,” yeah, that’s sloppy editing, but to act like that disqualifies her entire approach is a stretch. Administrative oversights happen. If you’ve ever been around a coach running a D1 program, you’d know they juggle recruiting, compliance, fundraising, travel logistics, AND training. Sometimes a detail slips.
The real meat of a program isn’t in a one-page summer handout anyway.. it’s in the day-to-day adjustments, the feedback loops, and the way the staff builds athletes over the long term. Dismissing everything because you didn’t get a perfectly tailored summer PDF seems like missing the forest for the trees.
And let’s not pretend “monitor your weight, come in fit, arrive healthy” is bad advice. It’s literally what every program tells their athletes. Not everything has to be dressed up in flashy jargon or reinvented from scratch to be effective.Also worth pointing out: Tennessee’s program has been sliding backwards since she left (with exception of bringing in two superstars), while UConn has been trending in the right direction. That’s not an accident. Results matter more than forum rants, and the scoreboard suggests her methods aren’t as “lazy” as you’re painting them.
So yeah, critique is fair, but this post comes across more like venting than real analysis of her coaching.
