Agree this is pathetic. She quit on her country and her teammates. There is not an athlete in history that has not been stressed about their sport. The level of victimhood in the US is overwhelming. Japan if you are smart you will exile Osaka to us before she brings the disease to your country.

No one is denying her past achievements. But that doesn’t give you a free pass to bail on your current teammates.

There is a difference between not giving someone a pass and being upset/disappointed or saying because her head is not in the game than that means she is soft and is a result of an entire generation being weak and how everyone of the past was better. It is utter nonsense. She has accomplished more than those before her, so she is obviously not less mentally tough than those of the past. Sure, be upset. But don't try to paint some larger picture, its absurd.

No problem with admitting you have mental health issues you need to take care of but it seems now the younger generation thinks it's better to quit than lose. If they can't be the best just drop out instead of taking the loss as then it isn't as bad in their book. In gymnastics they can reduce the degree of difficulty in their routine.
Although I don't know if Naomi is the same situation - it seems she had a lot of media opportunities that were conveniently timed for her newfound fame (magazine covers, Netflix documentary, torch lighting, etc.)

Old people have always run the world. If boomer is synonymous with old person then we might as well say boomers were responsible for the fall of Rome, WWI, and just about every other major war or catastrophe.
You literally make no sense here. So quitting during the completion means she is better then those before her. Again you keep pointing to get past but that’s not the topic here.
But yes, she is mentally weaker then many gymnasts of the past. Some people can handle the pressure, some can’t. This time the pressure got to her. Just accept it.
I posted an interview and she basically said she dropped out so she would not ruin the others chance for medals. This was a team competition today. Now for the individual events to follow, that is a different story. The way she butchered that vault, who knows how bad her Uneven Bars would have been - which was their next apparatus, and her worst apparatus.

Never quit a race. Came close once - wiped out on a hard 180 turn in a 5K road race and ended up hopping the last 2K. Did quit several workouts, discretion being better part of valor.
Ron Clarke, was old-school blood-and-guts and feared/respected for it, like Zatopek or Viren.
He would never give up mentally. Later in his career, he was plagued with tendon issues. He had surgery to have tendon sheathes removed. In "Run To The Top", he recounts how he would have happily been crippled for life later if it meant dominating at the top-level a bit longer.

I thought that's kind of out of left field, but maybe it is something else unexpected/unknown. Her press conference didn't seem very convincing either. Very strange. Not, quitting doesnt make her better. The fact she has accomplished more does. Because someone quits a single competition doesn't wipe away their past accomplishments. You cannot say she is mentally weaker for quitting a single competition when she has ALREADY WON MORE than those of the past. Get it now? She's proven she is mentally tougher by her body of work leading up to now. Its like you think she just woke up one day with a bunch of medals and then quit. You don't get to say some rando from the past is better because they finished a single competition with an injury, so what? She has already far surpassed. Its like if Kipchoge pulled out of a race then suddenly he is mentally weaker than folks who never could have sniffed his times.
Women's gymnastics is all about honed skill and flexibility - not a sport where drugs are of real benefit in training or competing. There have been very few cases of PED sanctions, most relating to systemic doping programs or Artistic Gymnastics.

I don't think she feels good about what she did. I don't think she feels she is hero. I bet she feels bad and will come back on Thursday and win everything. I hope so. Getting up after you fall, putting yourself together after you break is a great accomplishment.
All this said, the abuse she suffered from Nassar is a wildcard in all this. If she is thinking about that, it might be impossible for her to come back mentally. Competing for US Gymnastics after what he did and what they covered up might be a really tough proposition. Like asking some kid to win the state championship for a school where a teacher molested him. Like telling Frank Shorter he should win a race to support his abusive father.
You make valid points. I DNF'd in two marathons(in my defense one of them was 90 degrees) and a 5k (had to poop, true story).
Just doesn't seem likely that the Nasser issue is the reason here, though, why now and not 4 years ago?

It’s pretty simple, who is mentally tougher, someone who competes through adversity or someone who quits? I’ll give you the answer, the one that keeps fighting.
If anything you are hurting your case by bringing up the past. A first time Olympian probably feed more stressed then a veteran of the sport. Biles should be used to the spotlight. Instead she let it bake her.
