2:06 has been run on 70-80 mpw. So...yes it can. Whether you can...only one way to find out.

That was over very hilly terrain, so about equal to running 100+ miles a week over flat terrain.
I ran 2:27 on 65mpw, with like 50mpw in the month leading up to the race because of work travel and getting sick. Classic 1:10 first half, 1:17 second half, with most of the fall off from 2:20 in the last 4 miles. I was a 14:40/30:20 type. I can think of several people I ran with in college who could have run 2:19 on 70-80 a week if they cared to.
I always wondered what I could run if I did a few years at 80-100mpw. Oh well.

All he asked was if it can be done.
1. As our own HRE has told us many, many times Bernie Allen ran a top 10 finish at Boston on very limited mileage.
2. Your have a strange conception of what constitutes "below average".

Kawauchi has always run 80-90 mpw, more or less

He'll hit peak mileage of around 120 MPW.

Pretty sure some of the CIM 2:19 runners last year only trained 80mpw.
Were those 80mpe guys you assume exist also in their 30s, have taken a 4 year break from running, have 2 kids, and work 50+ hours a week. Let's be realistic. This guy has a ways to go and is a longshot at best.
You just described Jack Foster except rather than taking a break from running he didn't start until then. Sure, it'
s probably a long shot. If he doesn't try it will be a no shot.

Bernie was younger when he did that, had never done 100-120 mile weeks, had never taken time away from the sport, had faster track times, but ran significantly less than 70-80 a week. But he also went much faster than 2:19. Steve Hoag didn't run much more than 70-80 and did 2:11 but was also younger than the OP.

Also, he biked to work and a lot of his running was over the country side of New Zealand. So a lot of hills and a decent amount of cross training. That is what probably made up for his lack of mileage.

Can it be done? Maybe sneak in one or two 90s. Some background...I ran 8:20/14:30/30:30 in college then went right into marathon training and ran a 2:22 debut right after graduating with 100-120 miles per week of great training.
Following that things kind of fell apart and I started focusing on other things. Fast forward 10 years. I have a super hot 9.5 wife, 2 kids, make 6 figures working 50 hr weeks. Sub 14 5k looks unlikely, I’m not motivated enough to make $250k, and I’m not going to leave my wife for a 10.
I know 2:19 I far from elite, but I think it would be a pretty big accomplishment for a below average guy like myself. I took about 4 years off running before starting some light jogging to lose some weight and feel better at the end of 2017. By mid 2018 I had lost 30 lbs and ran a 32:00 10k off 40-50 miles per week. I’ve continued to progress in 2019 running 60-80 miles per week and have run a 15:10 5k and 31:30 10k so far.
I’m heading in the right direction and feeling good, but 2:19 is a huge jump. I’m signed up for CIM already. I am extremely limited on time so doubling isn’t really an option. I feel 80 miles per week is about as much as i can consistently run. I ask again, can it be done?
Interesting case for the magic wizard! Your PR:s are almost the same as myself ( with the difference I did 8:20/14:20/29.51 and 2:22 marathon when age 27-28).Can it be done on 60-80 mpw? Absolutely! It can even be done on your former 40-50 mpw!But as I always use to say: How much you run is not most important. It`s how you run your miles that counts most! This case is almost like someone (you) is kidding with me and knows that I had almost the exakt same PR:s and absolutely would get caught up by this . I have told before that the only thing I did wrong in my training back then was that I didn`t know the importance of LT-intervals and instead ran slower tempos, and also when it comes to the marathon I didn`t run my long runs as specific long with fast parts, mostly fast finish last 10-40 min in intervals or sustained. If you want me to coach you I would just love it and I promise to do it for free.Just contact me at facebook or twitter or my email :

Did you also know that his favorite "shorter" interval is 20 x 400m ? Mostly at 66-67 sec
My last two weeks. Mileage not very high, but very consistent. I’ve only had one day off this year. I didn’t start running in the 70’s until April this year. 60s for the first 4 months of the year.

Thur: 10.2 w/ 6x100m strides
Fri: 20x400 w/80m jog recovery. Average 73’s, 24 sec rest. Comes out to 6 continuous miles at 5:20ish. Tempo effort
Sat: 11 miles easy
Total: 76
Sun: 8.2 miles total, 3 mile tempo 15:57, 5x 30sec on 1:30 off. Felt real flat.
Mon: 10 miles easy

Would be so easy for me to change that kind of schedule to perfection! And that with 20 x 400m with just 24 sec at 80 m jog rest is just "crazy". I know your heart need more rest than that ( about 60 sec ) . And you need LT-intervals instead of the "CV":s . As I said , if you want me to coach you to perfection and sub 2:20 just contact me. :)
I did 10 x1k w/ 45 sec rest. 3:15 average about 2 weeks before that

With my system they will be faster , 3:09-3:10,and up to 15 of them with rest back to 120 bpm. If you really did that 20 x 400 at 73 sec and just 24 sec jog 80 m I see that you have same potential right now in training as back then you ran 14:30 at 5 k.

That is not a comment of what I wrote to you.
Looks like this was just another of those " Troll threads"as many here.
