USATF completely botches selection of 2019 Pan American Games team

A complete cluster. I know of at least 2 athletes who were emailed that they had been selected for the Pan Am team, and didn’t get notified until a week or more after that it had been a mix up. USATF is a total cluster. Sponsors, coaches, agents etc had already been alerted to the selection. What a sh!t show

The shocking part is that any of you are still shocked at their incompetence. These people get paid WELL. They are nothing more than athletics politicians. Imagine that the IAAF is the exact same way, but on the next higher level.

People from ABQ told me. Who knows when contracts will be finalized and an announcement made, probably not for awhile. But I think USATF made sure ABQ could do 2020 before they pulled out of NY.

USATF is a joke, they announced a hearing for arbitration tonight, and didn't even give notice all the athletes that were effected. Couldn't help but notice that one of these athletes Imani Oliver was caught for doping in 2016, and now only has a SB to put her 12th in US performance list. Good to know that not only is USATF itself unethical and immoral but they condone this behavior as well by breaking their own selection procedure, which was signed and dated by their CEO, to allow a drug cheat on the team.

Does anyone know of any precedent for this, in a legal sense? How can USATF change their selection procedure that is signed and dated, and never updated? Doesn't seem legal, definitely amoral.

I know of at least one other athlete who wasn't notified either. Max Siegel has no moral compass and should resign immediately, hopefully there is a lawsuit incoming.

The thing is, is that it does clarify in their selection procedure (section 1.1.3) that the qualifying window is January 1, 2018 to June 23 2019.

But then states below that, that the individual events will be cut off and selected June 10, 2019.

And to the other side of the arguement, if you read past that it does read “based off of 2019 ranking list (comprehensive)” with usatf refering to comprehensive as 2018/2019. But most others would understand that to be comprehensive of indoor/outdoor.

It’s all really confusing, it’s sad, it’s embarrassing. I can see why people on both sides of the arguement (2018/2019 or just 2019) would be very upset. Do you really need a 20 page selection procedure Manuel? Sum it up, make it simple.

Qualifying window is to get the Pan AM standard. That's different than their selection window.

Ignoring USATF picking the current existing team off of 2018/2019 marks when their website said they would pick the team off of 2019 marks, we've heard from a reliable source who said that a clerical excel sorting error in excel is how USATF initially picked a team that seemed to follow no set criteria.

We’ve heard from a source who was offered an explanation for the snafu by someone at USATF. The explanation is that an intern at USATF did not properly sort a spreadsheet containing top marks in each event that was supposed to incorporate marks from 2018 and 2019. For some events they sorted the marks and left all the 2018 marks at the top (men’s 1500) and for other events they allegedly sorted with 2019 at top (men’s 5,000) and presumable for others they sorted it correctly. The supervisors then didn’t notice it, and for whatever reason, USATF stayed silent once the mistake was discovered.

This whole thing would have been much much less of a snafu if USATF had come clean with that explanation when this first was discovered.

So I have spoken to an affected athlete and all I can say is USATF's attempt to cover it up may lead to several lawsuits because of those. Here is what I know, USATF went against their published rules and changed the selection parameters they tried to cover it up and hoped no one would notice by editing their online roster. BUT, when USATF "silently edited" the roster online (reformatting it under the 6/24 date) they didn't inform the arbitrator so the arbitrator didn't know to contact those athletes whose names were removed and inform them of the hearing. So several athletes found out that there was a hearing on Wednesday via social media. It's a mess.

Im sorry to be so harsh but if you read the procedure it is exceedingly clear that the selection procedure would use the 2019 performance list, any attempt to read it a different way is simply impossible to comprehend.

What it say is that the qualifying window for the Pan Am minimum mark achievement is for between January 1 2018 and June 23 2019. That is entirely different than the selection procedure... There is absolutely no argument for using the 2018/2019 list. They give a link to the list they will use for the procedure, and again its the 2019 list...
