Arkansas has the friendliest people on earth- they are ALSO incredibly backward. You wanna see something depressing- go and visit Little Rock Central- should at least have a plaque. Instead its an abandoned hole in the ground.
Arkansas does have some beautiful areas- I hope the people of Arkansas give her a warm reception.

There are f'ed up people and jerks from all over. Neither New England, the South, nor rural Indiana, etc. have any sort of monopoly over this. Alright, so ideally Shalane wouldn't have made the armpit of America reference. But, it seemed pretty light-hearted, like all of her journal entries. So, I wouldn't take it too seriously. Clearly, she doesn't have some huge issue with the South as she currently goes to school there and was planning on going to a NASCAR race.
Actually, Shalane, Northwest Arkansas is one of the richest areas in the U.S. Ever heard of Walmart or Tyson? Where do you think they came from? Anyway you are entitled to voice your opinion, but then again the 5000 Hog Fans at nationals will be entitled to voice their opinions about you as well. I just hope that you are prepared for it.

North Carolina has often imported its sport stars from the Northeast (like Erin Donohue, who is from New Jersey. One of the few UNC athletic heroes actually from North Carolina was Michael Jordan.
As for New Jersey's contention for "Armpit" status ... New Jersey threaded its turnpike/thruway through the absolutely ugliest parts of the state (maybe the ugliest part of America except for the northwestern urban corner of Indiana). But this did preserve the rest of New Jersey, which is quite often gorgeous.
Shalane's being from Marblehead reminds me of the great comment about the former Massachusetts Gov. Endicott Peabody. It was said "Endicott Peabody is the only man with four towns in Massachusetts named after him - Endicott, Peabody, Marblehead, and Athol."
I think that shalane needs to bone up on her geo-anatomy. The armpit of america would be somewhere in the wash-boston corridor, fayetteville is more like the crotch or choad area....

Uh...Chapel Hill is part of that Research Triangle, along with Raleigh and Durham. It's a pretty sophisticated and enlightened area, as many Northern transplants have discovered.

It's cool if you don't like the place. I mean, I'm from a HUGE city and sometimes I think it sucks. It's BY no MEAN the armpit!!! C'mon Fayetteville fans are awesome and very supportive of other athletes that come through this place and perform. You better back up your mouth, because 5,000 screaming fans have alot of pride in themselves. At least, Arkansans don't put other people down to make themselves feel better!
