On the other hand, threshold tests are outdated and simplistic thinking.
Nebulous at best, moronic at worst.
Aside from the conceptual shortcomings, protocol influences especially, the 'threshold' is always arbitrarily defined and always ignores the non-steady state slow component in VO2 kinetics. Certainly, Mills, Keino, Moorcroft, McChesney, Musyoki, Gebresalassie and Lagat trained quality, as many top endurance athletes prefer running faster to slower.

You’re missing a few from Brussels this year. Barega (18), Kejelcha (21), and Gebrihiwet’s (24) faster time.

Jacob has been training like a pro for 10 years now. The point still stands that he is going to hit his fastest times in the next year or two if he hasn't already. You don't train like he has and peak at the shorter races 20 years in to serious training. It is time to stop using his age as a crutch about his upside.

Ummm...ever hear of mo Farah? Went from 3:38 at 22 to 3:34 at 26 to 3:28 as a 30 year old. 3:28 after training professional for almost 10 years. That's nothing short of a miracle.

In the African recording system he's likely only 8 years old.
If Africans are universally overaged like some people claim, then Gebrselassie likely ran a 2:03:59 at 40+, and Kipchoge is probably nearing 40 as well.

Good point--I wouldn't want him to crash and burn like that Elud Kipcoge guy did. Such a fleeting talent...

Yet his fastest 5k was at 19...... as the OP would say, not bad for a 19 year old.

Thanks. If anyone wonders how the ingebrigtsens train, search my username in here
Agree, his (her?) comment kind of sucked, but to be fair, that's not a run-on sentence.
Great post, OP!
Explain to me the test, because I saw the episode and I thought that they slowly increased the speed over the course of an hour to find his threshold? That is different from from running a sub 60 half (not saying he can't do it the kid seems to be able to surprise us with anything) which requires speeds like 21kmph for a full hour. Anyhow if he was in the DL 5000m final in Brussels he would have run under 13 pretty or close to it.
If Jakob retire today, he would still have had a really great career.
2xEuropean champion + some great personal bests.
He does not need to prove anything, but he still has improved.
But I understand that he is not from the USA and that a lot of Americans will just be grumpy.
Mo was a professional for 10 years, he didn't always train like one. My teammates were beating him when he was 18 and they're all fat middle aged dads now.

He's not African.
But he’s been training like them for 4-5 years. And he clearly matured and developed very very early. He only has 2-3 more good years left before he stagnates.

Then why doesn't Henrik and Filip stagnate?

It doesn't last that long. They increase the speed and somewhat uphill (3-4% I think).
The point of the test is to figure out your treshold pace, at what pace your lactate-curve breaks. This pace is aprox the same pace as elite runners can hold for an hour (e.g half marathon pace). So, they are saying he theoretically can run sub 60 for a half marathon.

I think Jakob Ingebrigtsen Will be like Eliud Kipchoge and Bernard Lagat meaning a real long career, Lagat ran 13:06 For 5000 about 3 months before his 42nd Birthday, And I think Ingebrigtsen will start breaking 13 for 5000 in 2-3 years, get way under at age 25 and still be able to break 13 in his early to mid 40's.
As far as the test why not just run a Half Marathon to see how far under an hour he can go currently?

What do you mean by inadvertent assist at high speeds. How is the assist being provided?
