Agreed. Also Canada's Melanie Myrand - only recently going part-time in her nursing job - and Taylor Ward (although as a Brit who follows the American scene fairly closely, I must admit I don't know who she is!)

She's 32 years old with over 15 years of huge aerobic base, and she's run 2:41 and 2:36. That's who she is in the marathon. No elite woman has ever been where she is right now and come back to run low 2:20s.

Anecdotally, but consistent with the foregoing, she is really tall with a very inefficient stride and upper body movement. (And don't bring up Paula -- Gwen looks way more awkward than Paula.) So I just don't see why she would stick with this distance.

Agree though that she might have a shot at 10K.

Ironman is the answer.

She could re-write ironman history. Of course, I would have felt better in saying that had she run 2:32 today, but 2:36 is smoking for a woman with her swimming and biking ability.

She clearly won't be re-writing any history in running.

She goes home devastated! She's a very good runner but not elite. She should take what skills she has and go back to the tri where she could be more competitive.

I haven't noticed any cross training in Gwen's videos. She seems to struggle with 100 mile weeks. I wonder if she will get back on the bike/pool and reduce her running miles.

She has won Olympic Gold. She should do whatever she wants to do.

This result is just embarrassing. A 15 year old girl just went 2:40 at twin cities in the middle of her xc season.

All of the coaches that understand specificity in training know the conversation to elite world class marathoning does not happen overnight. Because you say it will happen or your vision wills you to belief it will happen is not reality.

Gwen is specific to the triathlon, she is a national class 5&10k track athlete. What we are seeing is that triathlon training background is not specific to the converting over to elite class marathoning for instant results.

The door to triathlon is closed. She’s never go back and nondraft long course is another world altogether. She needed this race to show she is going in the right direction. She’s dropped 5 minutes from a celebrity race at the NYC Matathon?! The curiosity from places like Outside magazine, etc. does here. This is not her race and BTC is not the correct set up. She had to talk big to get attention, sponsors and pay the bills. She needed to deliver, which in itself was a lot of pressure and very little would not be seen as a disappointment. But this is embarrassing.

Ironman?! She was never a strong swimmer and much less a cyclist. The logical jump was long course but she knew the difficulty with that. Non draft aero for 112 miles on the bike is not a natural jump from pack draft riding in standard distance races. The marathon or the Ironman would provide the curiosity of how an Olympic gold medalist would do but both were pretty unrealistic. Goes to show the mistake in extrapolating from initial results.

Obviously, she was never a "swimmer", but she was consistently top 10 out of the water in Olympic distance triathlons. She would be less than 1 minute behind the leader in an ironman swim, I am sure.

She is a pretty powerful biker.

I don't know how "unrealistic" the ironman is for her. The marathon is unrealistic for sure.

Parker Stinson has a higher chance of of winning the marathon gold in Tokyo than she does.

...because Gwen won't make Team USA.
