Kawauchi, 31, works 40 hours a week in the administrative office of Kuki High School in his hometown, just north of Tokyo. As a government employee, he can keep his race winnings ($150,000 for Boston) and bonus money but is not permitted to accept corporate sponsorships, including a potentially lucrative shoe contract.
That will change next April, when Kawauchi plans to quit his job and devote himself completely to running.

You need to re-read that. Articles say he is going to finish out the current year and than go on to be a full time runner.
Very impressive world class runner!! How many in the US have recently broken 2:09 and won Boston while working full time? His travel schedule alone is a killer. It was reported on the Chicago thread that he was seen in the airport, on his way back to Japan, within an hour or so after the race. I'm forgetting her name, but there was a US runner in the 90's who had a similar race schedule. Made you wonder what she could have done if she only focussed on 1 or 2 per year. But, whatever makes you happy!!
Hasn't he ran better this year in the marathon than every US man combined? Pretty sure!
He should pull a reverse Sage Canaday and switch to ultras.
Guy is mediocre at best at the marathon. It's not cool to run lots of mediocre times.. might as well step up and actually win some ultras, make more $$ than being a sub-par / average road marathoner
The only reason he won Boston is because it was essentially an ultra marathon due to the inclement weather.

The guy is a low level government worker.
I love how people on here act like he's saving lives, developing the cure for cancer, or leading up a multi-billion dollar company as their CEO.
In all reality, he probably does a few hours of work a day tops. There's a reason why government jobs attract the least talented and most lazy workers.

Most of us work at menial jobs. Most of us don't manage to become world class marathon runners while we're doing it.
So break it down to sub-2:15 marathons, cause isn't that what letsrun was discussing earlier?
