All of the people complaining about it being shortened are ignorant. I ran a race once where thunderstorms were forecast. At about the halfway point (for the faster folks) it started storming and they tried to call it off. They had police trying to force people off of the road and cut off part of the race. Many people who must have had it on their bucket list refused and ran on the sidewalks up and down the street by the finish line until their GPS watches claimed they had gone the distance. Meanwhile there were flashes of lighting directly above them. I still can't believe nobody got hurt - that day engrained in me the importance of calling a race when the weather is projected to be bad because guess what? Even though Pikes Peak *appeared* to be good weather, weather is notoriously difficult to predict perfectly.
Good call by the race directors. The people complaining on here are tough stuff on their keyboards but that's about it.

You most have missed his Squamish 50 mile win in 2016 and his 2nd place at Lake Sonoma in 2017.

Lightning has been recorded striking an astonishing 25 miles (40 kilometers) away from its cloud of origin, traveling a not-so-lazy horizontal route before it eventually reaches the ground.
Recorded how often? I'm going out on a limb and betting it's more likely that a plane will crash on you.
I have seen a lot of lightning bolts, and not one of them was in clear weather.

People always talk about Carpenter as if he was God but in fact his records only stand because of the erosion that has occurred at the peak so faster athletes that are coming up these days would have to be way fitter than him to break it. Also they did not have course marshals back when he set his record, also he was not drug tested after that record or really before so....
Keep in mind for courses that have been unaffected by weather, guys from this generation have crushed Carpenters best times. Gray and Canaday both have run faster than carpenter on numerous courses and also Gray has broken a few of his records locally and abroad. That pikes record is gonna be hard to tackle due to so many factors that aren't being brought up.
You have no idea what you're talking about.

If you don't respect wath Matt Carpenter has done you're utterly ignorant about mountain running and should shut up from now on.
Matt has won the North Face 50 in San Francisco at 44 years old! That is truly impressive! He beat Kyle Skaggs, Geoff Roes etc. Geoff’s Crow Pass Crossing record in Alaska is impressive!
Check out the race video to see what the worlds best look like in action. Dakota averaged 5:44 pace for the 13 mile descent on a rocky technical trail at altitude after running uphill over two hours all while dodging hobby joggers on their way up. Truly impressive! I’d like to Kipchoge try to keep up. There were a lot of bloody knees at the finish line. Sage said he supermanned while running under 6 pace and may have broken a finger.
On the bright side, there are a bunch of other mountains in Colorado you can run up without paying anytime you want. There are also many other trail races in Western Colorado that have far better scenery and better terrain (less rocky, smoother grades) as well. Try any of the marathons and half marathons in the roaring fork valley, steamboat springs area or summit county. I never really understood people's obsession with the Ascent.

I would say it is like Boston in some regards. It has been around for a long time.
You can run up Pikes Peak anytime you want as well.
