Since he was the lead runner there should have been nearly instantaneous medical help called in from the lead race vehicle. The spectators should not have stepped in since the race officials should have been paying attention. Probably had too many Fosters and a total c o c k up.
I ran the Gold Coast Marathon a few years ago and it was disorganized and patched together. Aussies tend to have a sink or swim mentality.

Interesting to see the concern when it happens to someone they care about and can relate to instead of some nondescript African.
I guarantee you if this had been in Kenya, the crowd wouldn't have cared a lick about the marathon. They would have administered first aid themselves and put him on the first vehicle to the nearest hospital.
far from the finish he was cooked and they did nothing, prayer and thoughts for runner.

As another poster mentioned, this is a mirror image of the 1954 Commonwealth Marathon, and following that race - for a while - it was considered unsafe for athletes to run in high temperatures.
Remember Rome 1960 marathon? That race finished in complete darkness.
There is a reason why the big city marathons are run in the Spring and Autumn.
I recall Geb saying that he wouldn't consider running the Athens Olympic marathon in 2004 because the temperature would be too high!
And, that's a guy from the heat of Africa.

Great generalisation you uneducated prick. I'm an Aussie and I've never even seen someone drink a Fosters. That said, your insular comment does not surprise me in the slightest.
1982 Commonwealth Games marathon in Brisbane was also very hot but they started that race at 6 o'clock in the morning.

Really?!?!? If he clearly can't get up, if he can't run in a straight line, if he looks like death, all of which Hawkins was, it's pretty obvious to even the most naive spectator that he needs help. Don't let him get back up. He's not going to win, let alone finish in that condition, so would he really be that upset about being helped out and DQed? Absolutely not. That whole scene was just shameful for both the spectators and the officials.

Nobody cares about events in a random marathon in Poland. This is the commonwealth games marathon.
Sure, in Kenya they would've robbed him off his essentials then trown him in the ditch. Perhaps an arrow to the knee, typical Kenyans.

One thing not mentioned here, but Steve Cram kept mentioning, was that the water bottles had plastic seals (to avoid "contamination"- I guess for doping control) that Hawkins in particular seemed to have some trouble opening. Makes me wonder if he skipped a bottle or two out of frustration.
