He has run 4:10 in the mile indoors so far this season. Assuming that was not a really tactical race, then you're right and it isn't a great result for his talent level.
He also has run 1:19 on a moderately slow track indoors this year. That is a pretty reasonable result, probably equivalent to about 1:49 to 1:50 on the same track, so about 1:47 to 1:48 outdoor fitness right now.
In other words, he seems to be attempting to regroup. Maybe it will work out for him, maybe it wont, but I wouldnt judge his results too harshly. Lets see what he does outdoors, if he is healthy now through then, he may be back on track.
He ran the mile race poorly from a tactical standpoint. Definitely didn't look like a sub-4 guy, but he's definitely also in better than 4:10 shape. He let the lead get away from him and was in 8th for far too long. He trusted that 1:19 speed wayyy to much. In the DMR, he almost got run down by a team that started maybe a second behind them. However their DMR anchor was completely fresh and Slag had already finished 2 mile races.

You gotta be mental to think a 1:19 is worth a 1:47/8 outdoors. Take a quick look at any conference where the 600 is run and then check what PRs the 1:19 guys have. None are near 1:47 or 1:48.

Most 1:19 600m runners can't run a 3:59 mile
The conversion table is close to what he claimed putting it at 1:50. I looked at the PRs of guys in the 600 and 800 at the Big Ten Championships and they are remarkably close to the estimated times for verification. Guys who run 1:16 seem to run 1:46-1:47 and guys at 1:20 seem to run about 1:50. Slagowski is on the low end of his range also in the 600 making his improvement greater than others who would move up. He is probably in 1:50 shape and 1:49 outdoor.

I coached a kid to a 1:47 in the 800 and earlier that year he ran a 600m time trial in 1:21. So you are wrong, you can run 1:20 and then run 1:47-48.

That just shows the 1:21 wasn't a good indicator of his 1:47 potential. 1:21 is very slow for a 1:47 guy.

you are all dumb. If you even split a 1:48.00 you come through 600m in 1:21.00 - it's 27.00 per 200.
But nobody even splits 800s. Most people running 1:48 will come through in about 1:19 or 1:20.
My old teammate Drew Windle, yes 1:44 Drew Windle, used to run a 600 time trial early in the season on our 147m track. He’d run something like 1:23 if I recall, then usually a month later run 1:19 or so on a 300m track, and by the end of the season he’d obviously be running 1:46.
