Katelyn Tuohy 4th 4:47 Mile Millrose

It was definitely an off day as she ran close to that pace for 3000m a few weeks back. I’ll be honest though - I think her relatively “slow” times in the shorter distances (600m/1000m last week, 2:12 800 PR, 4:47 mile, etc) make her 9:05/15:37 even cooler.

I wish her the best in the future and hope that she becomes an All-Time great. With that said, she could “flame out” and never run fast again and she’d still be a legend in my book.

Touhy was quoted somewhere (maybe a preview article or race announcers) that she was going for the record tonight... just something in the 4:40 range. She might have been sick or had some other reason to downplay expectations.

If she was in the high school girls' mile then she doubled! I saw her on the Wanamaker women's mile list, but didn't finish in the top 8 (broadcast at 5:30 EST). KThen she wasn't in range for a finishing kick she might have saved for this race.

I heard that she went out really fast going for a record and just sort of blew up. Sounds like a pretty reasonable explanation to me. Nothing to be worried about unless you worry about things.

How would it be "downplay(ing) expectations" to say "she was going for the record tonight"?

I saw the race. She went for it big time from the start. Others couldn’t even sit on her. She had a cap of about 20 meters for most of the race. But it was too fast for her to hold it. They closed in with 2 laps to go and in the final lap she was still fighting until the second girl passed her. Then seemed caVe. It was a great effort. Though at the end she didn’t go over to congratulate those that beat her. Sure she can be disappointed but be gracious in victory and defeat. Emma collapsed on the track hugging the girl that beat her last night.

Probably tired from all the racing and chasing record. Didn't really get much of a break after XC. Hopefully, the coaches do the smart thing and take a break for awhile until outdoor season.

To be fair, that was Emma's good fried and training partner that beat her. So not the best comparison.

Chasing every record in the hs books as a SOPHOMORE is setting her up for disappointment. Better to train and race with your hs teammates and slowly build to get those records. Bring your teammates along for the ride. DId her team run a DMR or a 4xmile during the meet? 15 is just too young to handle the pressure that comes along with chasing records. Peaking at the age of 15 is really going to hurt when she's a senior and isn't getting any better and others are surpassing her who she beat as a sophomore. Slow it down and stop talking to the press about the next record to go down.

She has been running on her team’s relays in big meets since 7th/8th grade. She helped them set what was then a National record in the DMR. And the past 2 Years has run relays with her teammates at Millrose (including a 4x4 last year which according to these message boards she probably runs slower than a snale). She also has NY regional and state meets coming up where she’ll probably quadruple or something including relays to help her team. I agree with not chasing records everytime, but she put in her time with her team, let her chase records alone.

agree talking to press is gonna come back and bite her - better to just run and if a record is broken great, if not, so what? giving interviews about her plan is unneccessary. On anohter note - way to go Kelsey Chmiel - she's being overshadowed but is quietly accomplishing great things and has another year to do more. also - just because Tuohy broke a 5k record doesn't mean she has to break a mile record - she's clearly a longer distance runner - shorter distances aren't her strength - and that's ok - what have to be the best at all distances?
