Nike isn't a charity. Why don't you give Gilmore $50,000 to make ends meet? If Nike thought Gilmore could help sell shoes they'd pay him. Tiger's "Danny Noonan" type putt at The Masters made Nike look pretty smart.

It doesn't work like that, no matter how much we wish. To the one who does the best with what he has been given, more will be given to him. To the one who doesn't use what they have been given it will all be taken away and then some.
Tiger is loaded and probably burden with all the wealth he has accumulated. Maybe his heart will soften over time to support distance runners. (ha-ha) Here's to hoping.
Perhaps NIKE or another shoe company will start a grass roots program again.
I wish Belyaneh the best with his efforts to try to compete again and to be the best head of household he can be.

uh i think he made it clear he was looking for a coaching job. i'd say a 2:06 marathon are skills enough to coach high school (or anyone for that matter).

Maybe Belayneh is a bit old to break another world record, but his achievements are no small fit to be judged by people like us. As some people have already pointed out, we all came with nothing, - no knowledge, skill or money - but with lots of dream and the opportunity to become somebody.
Wish him all the best and hope this discussion may bring him some opportunities to impart his tremendous talent to young and old who one day may become our Olympians.

I doubt that one could land a college coaching job without good English. A job as an assistant just doesn't pay enough for most people.
Of course, everyone can see that the first 2:06-marathoner in the world has some knowledge about running, but you also have to have other skills, and it helps a lot to have a college degree. Not trying to be mean, just trying to be realistic.

Contact New England Runner Magazine, ask for Fitzy or Michelle and get this info into their hands. At minimum there must be some colleges in this area that would at LEAST be curious enough to investigate. That is, if their AD's have brains that function...his value as an assistant coach for distance events would be of great value but I haven't a clue what the pay rate is for those folks.
The problem might be CERTIFICATION. This is almost akin to someone who is a World Reknowned bona fide EXPERT on a subject not being able to get a job teaching it because he/she does not have a degree in EDUCATION or is not a member of the Teacher's Union.
BAA, GBTC, Somerville Road Runners, Back Bay Road Runners, Frontrunners, Central Mass Striders, North Shore Striders,
Whirlaway, Winner's Circle AC, Hopkinton Running Club, Greater Framingham Running Club, Tri Valley Running Club, Hurtin' For Certain Striders...all these groups/clubs have websites and telephone numbers, so perhaps THEY could help as well. Just bang the drum. That's not even touching New Hampshire, Maine or R.I.

i didn't know this was a big secret. he has been in boston for a number of years. i used to run with him as a member of athletics east. he was even competing on our cross country team. he had to go back to ethiopia for a year i believe when his visa ran out (back in 2003), but i believe he is here semi-permanently. he is a great guy, still a member of ae i believe, although i don't know what kind of role he plays in the club now. a really stand up guy though, and a great family whom i've met a few times.
i think his biggest obstacle is in his communication. his english is not great, and its not easy to convert his training into our terms. obviously the more you hang around with him the easier it is to communicate, but i would say to be involved with coaching of any kind, he'd need to have some help with that. i hope that he can find something more permanent.
