Do you find it a little awkward to pass other runners or people joy riding on their bikes during your runs?

this is 100x worse in a shared pool environment or a masters swim class type thing were your lane mates are either a speed-mismatch or just have terrible lane etiquette and through some fault of their own dont put the fastest swimmers in front at all times, rather have self-awareness problems and think they are faster, yet get toe-tapped to pass several times a workout and once passed never come close to keeping up with the person they presume to be faster than

then lets just say hypothetically this scenario replays over and over at each and every workout and you finally have to find a different masters group that actually follows normal lane etiquette

yea that actually sucks. Not whatever autistic/social anxiety/panic scenario the OP is describing

It's not so much embarrassing for me as it is a major problem - when running a hard workout I tend to be faster than the speed of light then when I start my cool down I notice I'm back in the 1970's... alway hard to find my way back to the present.

Of course, now that I think about it maybe I am actually from the future?

Came here to say this, especially when they pass you back when you're on the rest part of the fartlek, then you blast past them again, repeat... I actually have told these people I'm doing a fartlek as if that makes it any less awkward.

I don't enjoy passing other runners, that's plain uncomfortable, but I don't mind passing walkers, as there's no tension there - any runner is very likely to pass a walker. I do LOVE passing bikes...it's so satisfying, not in some twisted competitive way but in that it makes me feel like I'm just flying and lifts my mood for the run.

One time I passed a guy and he sped up and then I sped up and then we caught another guy who also sped up and then the three of us raced for like the next 2 miles. Actually, for one of the guys I suspect it wasn't a very hard effort...

I have actually had people yell at me when I pass. Why? Well, the people who wear earphones, etc. don't hear me (hint, you won't hear your attacker either..)

And, they get shocked or scared for a second, so they jump and right away say something. some say wow, others yell at me. Well, I've tried yelling "On your right!" But , it's useless. so now I just pass, and if they yell, I simply smile and point to my ears. Maybe they'll get the message. If you can't hear me yelling, and I make the effort, what right do you have to be mad? you are the selfish one.

Okay, people who are wearing earbuds, may now chime in about your rights, etc, blah blah blah. Tell me about them when a peron attacks you and you never heard them coming.!

Agree. It's also awkward/annoying to pass people listening to music on headphones. You try to make noise as you get near but you just know they're going to jump 3 feet in the air as you pass.

Also, I hate when doing an out-and-back run, you encounter another runner going the other way just as you are just about to turn around. Now you have to run an extra 3-4 minutes so you don't appear to be turning with them or creepily stalking them.

I aqua-jogged past a swimmer last week. That's awkward, because we shared the lane for awhile.

It isn't awkward. It is the best part of a run. I thought that was the entire point of running in commonly used areas. My incredible 15:41 5k speed paired with my unbelievable 2:32:18 marathon endurance makes me the fastest guy in my town of 20,000. I pass errrrrrrrybody.

I am glad that you avoid other people when you go out running because we do not like to be passed the way you do it.

And its creepy when you just keep pace and do not pass.

And to learn that you are checking us out so closely that you notice us checking our shoulders, snickering or saying something. Geez.

Do me a favor by choosing one of the below.

If you see that you are going to pass someone:

-Turn around or off the route asap to avoid passing

-Keep your eyes straight ahead and down, Pass quickly and pull away quickly. Act like we do not exist.

-Slow down, politely ask us if you may pass, try to start a short conversation, then say thanks and excuse me as you pull away.

This entire thread is completely wrong....what are you guys even talking about. I actively seek out places where there are lots of runners so I can blow by them and make them feel bas about their weak feeble slow bodies. Nothing puts a bigger smile on my face then sending nocatee hobby joggers home DEVESTATED.

been out ran by old ladies before. she was maybe in her 60s and overweight and wearing a golf visor and fanny pack. I was just too exhausted I couldnt catch up to her.. wasnt even a race but I experienced ego death that day as she faded into the horizon.

Only thing awkward is getting to your turn around spot when someone is coming by, especially a female, I either cut it short or run a little farther because I don’t want them to think I’m stalking them,

Same here, this is my only awkward moment. But it's exponentially worse when I go full speed ahead of a girl, then just hit my rest period. It makes me look like I feel like I have to outrun her but couldn't handle that pace. I always feel douchey when I do this, but whatever.

Haha I've done this one too many times.

Also, my favorite part of passing people on a narrow side walks is that that no one ever really walks /jogs straight. It's tough to determine what side you're going to pass them on and when you do make the decision they suddenly cut back to that side right as you pass them, causing them to jump b/c you're so close. This happens to me at least once on a run.
