I feel like sometimes it looks like a dick move, especially passing other runners. I try to avoid other people out during my runs when I can. Sometimes i can see them check their shoulder and speed up. I just keep pace, it's more awkward when the passing is in slow motion. The people on their bikes will sometimes snicker or say something. Does anyone else feel this way?
What else are you supposed to do, run right behind them until you or they go a different direction? That would look pretty weird imo. Yeah, it's a little awkward to pass someone while running (or walking for that matter), but such is life.

It's only awkward when I pass cyclists on the downhills.
Agree it is annoying to pass someone going almost exactly the same speed. Fortunately there aren't many people doing 5:30/mile easy runs like me.
This is crazy talk. |What's not to love about passing people walking and riding bikes? I like to see them jump when they have headphones on. Running past mountain bikers is hilarious. The best part is passing cars though, or a whole passenger train.
I only find it awkward if I happen to cut a fart as or right after I pass. Otherwise, I make a friendly remark, like "have a good run."

worst thing ever is when theres someone a good ways ahead of you running ALMOST the same speed but maybe 5 seconds/mile slower and you gradually catch up over the course of 2-3 miles and then you're right next to them for a good minute or so as you ever so gradually pull away and you really don't want to talk to some stranger.
my worst nightmare is having someone turn onto the road where I'm running as I run by the turn as well and they are running the exact same pace and we end up running next to each other in awkward silence for like 2 miles.
I've never found it awkward to pass someone while running. What is really awkward is that I will occasionally overtake a jogger while I'm walking. I do feel like kind of a douche when this happens.
It's awkward only when I speed up a little bit to catch the runner ahead of me and go by, only to have the other runner suddenly wake up and come blazing back past me. This usually happens when the other runner is a guy and he suddenly realizes he's just been passed by an old lady.
Passing someone on a bike (when I'm running) is simply pathetic unless we're going up a really steep hill.
It's not always awkward - most of the time the speed difference is fine - it's only awkward when it's a slow pass - when they are close to your pace but not fast enough. Or when you aren't sure if passing will become some sort of competition. The big problem is the competitive person who resists the pass or who then gets on your butt and you hear their heavy breathing. And I get what you're saying. All you wanted was to enjoy your run on your own and not getting into some stupid thing with a stranger - just wrecks your zen.
Anyway, especially on a long run when you don't want to run too fast and have a long way to go, yes passing can be awkward. Passing bikes is always awkward.

I'm guessing it makes you feel like you are very special.
I know I feel special when I dunk on the little kids in the neighborhood when playing hoops in my driveway on my 8 foot rim.

You must have some sort of social disorder. Possibly a form of jaminism.
You should see the looks on pilots' faces when I pass them in their jet planes on a downhill.

The worst is when it's a hilly stretch, and you pass the bikers on the uphill portions, then get passed on the downhill portions, back and forth.
If they are on biks then yeah sometimes its a tad awkward. It shouldnt be but it is. I also feel a little bad when its an older guy whos trying super hard but is kind of slow. Must be so discouraging to have a younger guu blow passed. I know ill hate that when im that age too lol. Both scenarios beat getting stuck running beside a pokemon go player the whole way around the park though.
What's worse is when you're on a fartlek run and you approach someone while on your rest interval, and you run behind them for a minute or so then blast past them and it looks like you're just trying to show off (even though I am, but that's not the point).

That happened to me once. We talked and even met later that week to run again. Haven't seen him since though.
