If I wore running clothes, especially shoes and sports bra, that would be fine, but most other clothing would be uncomfortable to run in. Plus there's the safety issue. People are clumsy enough as it is. I don't need them running into me, especially with shopping carts.

I used to run most places I had to go.
There are four reasons I wouldn't: carrying something, too much crap in my pockets, can't arrive all sweaty, inappropriate footwear.
The older I get, almost always one of those scenarios apply when I have to get from here to there.
Why do you assume it's socially unacceptable? The likely reason you don't do it it's probably because you know it would make you smell awful and you don't have the proper gear at the moment, or are carrying a briefcase or something.
By all means, run if you want to. Grow a long beard if you want to as well.
People don't give you as much attention as you think really, at least not as much as you.
I routinely do this, especially for short little things like going from the car into the grocery store. Feels good, gets me out of the cold faster, and is generally fun.
Never get any wierd looks, people probably just assume I'm in a hurry.
I don't, and I suspect many people don't, jog for longer things because that's starts to get much higher on energy consumption and more importantly you start sweating like mad, which I find quite annoying unless I'm in workout clothes working out
I once witnessed a near stampede created by two businessmen in shirts and ties who were calmly jogging down the sidewalk in downtown San Francisco.
This guy who saw them froze with fear, looking behind the joggers for the threat, because why else would someone in normal clothes be running? He ran right up to them and then past them because he knew that the pitbull/bear/murderer gets the slow guy. Other people on the sidewalk saw this, and in moments, a chain reaction occurred and there were dozens of panicked people running down the street, some screaming, frantically looking over their shoulders for the culmination of every bad dream they've ever had in their lives. Each new person who saw the group thought "I don't know what they're running from, but I'm not willing to find out" and joined the group.
So really, you should never do it. It's irresponsible.
I jog or run almost everywhere. If I have to be cleaned up/dressed nice somewhere, I take clothes in a running backpack and clean up a bathroom. Hęll with "socially acceptable"--my wife and friends accept me.

In a game, people stop running when they can warp/ride a faster vehicle/horse. In real life as things are further away, people can run or take transit/bikes/cars. Who the f walks? Plus I would call you out to take a shower you hobo if you stank beside me in class. I'd probably give you the last few crumbs of my lunch though.
This is a fascinating thread and I couldn't believe how it applies to me. I recently moved back to NYC after spending many years out west. I still run and do races but of course my times a re a lot slower. I still get please out of the process of training hard, that buzz you get after a good interval workout, etc. One day I decided that in addition to my everyday regular run, I was going to jog for 10 minutes 4 times a day. I decided on 10 minutes because no matter how slow I jogged it would guarantee me at least 1 mile. So when I'm in the city walking around I will say to myself, ok at this time I will jog for 10 min. Then maybe an hour, 3 hours, whatever later I do it again. I walk in running shoes so it's very convenient. After several weeks I noticed i had tons more energy and even managed to shed 10 lbs. I discovered the real freedom of running. So if my regular training run is 6 miles i know that I'll log in 10 because of my 4X10 minute routine. It has been amazing and has made running really fun again.
I almost posted the exact same thing last week. I would so much rather run than walk the half mile trek from my car to the office, but I just don't want to be "that guy."

Got me thinking. Why shouldn't I jog to class? Jog around the super-market for my groceries? Jog to my car in the morning? If I'm willing to endure the mild discomfort for the sake of saving time, why is jogging socially unacceptable?
I just took 33 high school students to our annual Mall Hunt scavenger hunt. When we met at the end, a pack of security came over and scolded me. They said they received many complaints because students were jogging in the mall.
They mentioned how today, in 2017 people are very skiddish in pubic when it comes to people moving quickly.
Our group is now banned from the mall.
I run to work and back everyday.

people are fat f#*@'s (generally speaking) and they want people to be like them. Its this herd mentality. Someone doing something out of the ordinary it is seen as committing some kind of travesty. Basically it reminds them how weak and lazy and complacent they are in their own lives and they don't like being reminded of it so they lash out at who is reminding them.

And also because your average American has an I.Q. of 85, and always suspects, IN A CLASSIC CASE OF PROJECTION, that if you are "jogging" (and not wearing appropriate "jogging gear") that you must be on the run from somebody who is trying to catch you (most likely the police or store security).
Visited Australia from the US this winter. Saw a TON of people jogging to/from work with running packs on, I assume filled with work clothes. I bet if you just started doing it no one would care.

I've done that. The first time, I went to pray/say my goodbyes over the deceased and sweated all over the corpse. A little tasteless. So now I make sure to splash some water on my face before I approach the cadaver.

On occasions I walk, it would be dangerous to run. Definitely run into someone or be hit in a parking lot or in a store.
