100m times for ELITE MID to LONG DISTANCE

Most long distance runners could not break 12, some mid d runners could not break 11, but if you look at speed based 800 types like Cas Loxsom or brandon johnson, no way they could not break 11.

After you watch Farah get destroyed by a 235lb boxer and a high jumper, skip to 48 seconds (a time Farah could never run for 400m) and watch the skeleton struggling to put down any speed or power.

Mo Farah is one example. There must be plenty MidD athletes out there who can break 11.xx. I am an upper tier D1 800m runner and I ran a 10.9x FAT in high school at our sectional meet my senior year (I am a sophomore now). And I am fairly confident that towards the end of the spring when I am tuning my speed that I can break 11, still

Notice that he is much quicker than the 14/28:30 Brownlee, but MUCH slower than the power and speed athletes. Maybe slowly things will start to click.

It absolutely baffles me that people on a site dedicated to distance running have no idea about distance running. How the mechanisms of training for distance events make the 100m irrelevant. How it is very possible for an athlete that simply has no other gears but has trained his 5k/10k ones to be 'fast', to run the same pace for 100m as 400m from a still start.

It's like you think sprinters look a bit like Joshua because they have nothing else to do. Muscle beats endurance in the 100m, this is just obvious. Without being a runner just having that power and strength you can put down a decent time.

I ran 15:53 5k, and I had no kick at all, but I still managed to run a 13s 100m and you think Mo who does lots of heavy weight training and speedwork can't run much faster than 12.9 with some proper sprinting techniques? You must be dumb at best.

On a side note, Bekele already said in an interview he once ran 11-flat for the 100m. Mo, who is more speed-oriented, certainly can run at least 11.4-11.5 with proper training.

I've split sub 50, run sub 24 200 reps in practice, and sub 12 100m reps, and have run 5:30 pace for a 15k. I'm not a great runner but If I can do this stuff with a 1:52 800m PR, then speedy mid distance guys who run 1:45 or under can break 11. If you honest to god think Mo is only running 12.5 at his best you need to reevaluate your thinking. Mo may not break 12 but he'd be damn close.

Any smart professional distance runner is going to be doing some sprint training and weight lifting. They're not nearly at the level of sprinters but they can surely run 12 second 100's for a little faster. That is painfully mediocre.

I would go as far to say that 90% all elite 800m runners, 1:44 and below, could possibly break 11.00 in the 100m. I think the 1500m and up is where things get squirrelly. Guys like Centro, Makh, and MAYBE Kiprop I could see breaking or coming close to 11.00. However guys like Iguider or Willis (guys who are more strength-based) probably couldn't. However, 3k and up, I think you will be hard-pressed to find someone who could break 11. Maybe the Mobot could do it, but only in the right race with the right rabbits.

No, times from blocks or a standing start are the only meaningful way to measure 100m speed. With a running start, you have no idea how fast the person started, how many steps they took, etc.

We aren't talking about proper training. We are talking about in their elite distance training.

Bekele cannot run 11 flat for 100m. That makes absolutely no sense. If he had that speed combined with his endurance, he would be running a 3:20 1500m.

Your personal example of being able to run 13 seconds is not helping your argument. You ran 15:53. Bekele and Farah are sub 13 minutes. They are OVER 3 minutes faster than you in a 5k. That huge difference in endurance means they don't have to be that much faster than 13 seconds for 100m. That's what endurance is: being able to hold your fastest pace for a long time.

Is the video showing Mo running a 12.9 also a moron?

They just showed video proof of Mo at his best and he only ran 12.9. You say at his best he would run faster than 12.5 so.... why did he run 12.9?

You can do your times with a 1:52 PR because you are speed oriented not endurance oriented. Someone else running 1:52 based instead on endurance is not going to be able to run your sprint times. Sure, the speed based sub 1:45 guys can run under 11, but long distance runners are going to be mostly between 12-13 seconds.

Farah had an all out 400m with a running start and he could only manage a 50.x. That's a running start 400m. You are underestimating how exceptional sub13/sub27 endurance is. It allows them to hold near top speed for long amounts of time.

Obviously, the problem is that there is little to no empirical evidence. Which elite mid/long distance runner in his prime would run an all out 100 metres from blocks?

A few years ago, I asked Thomas Wessinghage (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Wessinghage - 3:31,58 / 13:12,78) that question. His answer was: "I can't really answer that question." He ran 11,9 from blocks as a junior. He said in his prime (age 27/28) he probably could have run 11,5 at best. But that's just an educated guess.

I saw Casmir Loxsom run 22.1 from a standing start, into the wind, with no real competitiom at an all-comers meet last summer. I wonder if he does a lot of sprint training or if he does traditional 800m training and just happens to have wheels.

Classic Letsrun......I run a slower 5k than x pro runner so surely he can sprint better then me. That's not how it works. The reason why someone can run a 13 5k is the same reason why he runs slow for 100m. A fast 400m by a distance runner just shows good endurance.
