Hardrock is a major 100.
Walmsley would crush him at any distance these days, but he has run 14:34 for a trail 100 (~8:45 pace, slightly slower than what Walmsley would have run at WS, on a moderately hilly course at 4500').

I have a hard believing that a guy like this is doping. He was interviewed and talked about how he was basically living out of a car and working as a bicycle mechanic. Not exactly someone who could afford PED's. As for WS100 and their income - below is the charity navigator report on them.
Also - not sure if this is true or not, but I have heard that they can't offer prize money because of the fact that they're running the race though state parks.

Wow, no congrats from Canaday? WTF? They are on the same HOKA team and no reaction (with such an intense social media presence) to some of the key accomplishments in the ultrarunning world? Somebody is being consumed by jealousy and insecurity. Sad. The WS100 wound is still bleeding.
I can't believe he did that so fast. My friend and I "ran" down the Kaibab last year and it took us 2 hours and 20 mins.

Dude's legit. What could King and Krar have done if they would have quit their jobs and focused on trails in their mid-20s? Walmsley's got their track speed. It was only a matter of time before someone still in his prime with elite-level talent and technical running ability treated these stunts like a pro. I suspect feats like this will inspire others with top-level wheels to give this stuff a go. Why the hell not.
Skeptics ought to look deeper before slandering, 12th at NCAAs in steeple and low 29 in his one and only 10K is solid. So this is definitely not out of nowhere. Because he's USAF he became an officer with a full-time job right out of school and basically quit the sport in his prime, save for some random fun runs. With some of those on trails he found himself crushing the "professionals" which must have been enough to get the fire going again. What we're seeing now is the results of an elite runner going all-in with trails in basically an ideal training situation: no career, at elevation in Flagstaff alongside elite marathoners to keep the pace honest, and soft surface galore. A lot of solid NCAA guys do the same, so hopefully these exploits will keep getting more interesting

Patrick Smyth (1:02 half marathon, 28:30 10km), David Laney (14:03 5k/2:17 Marathon), Tim Tollefson (2:18 marathon), Sage Canaday (2:16 marathon), Andy Wacker (13:41 5km, 1:04 half), Joe Gray (1:03 half, 8:49 steeple, 29:03 10km), Chris Mocko (8:50 steeple), Hayden Hawks (13:51 5km, 28:53 10km), Max King (2:14 marathoner still). All these other fast track roadies have been pretty good in the ultra mountain racing scene, but they haven't totally dominated. Speed and talent are not new here. Some little course records here and there but usually it's a close competition with the likes of Zach Miller (31 minute 10km runner) and Dakota Jones (didn't even run in college?). Trails are the great equalizer. Walmsley has simply hit it out of the park this year. It will be interesting to see how he fairs at The JFK50 this year with times of 5:47-5:56 in his past 2 runnings from '15 and '14.

Hope you're kidding. Many of these guys have won internationally against competition or placed high. They've done a mix of road and trail performed well. Jim has won some domestic trail races that lacked competition and ended up being no pressure time trials against himself. His inability to handle pressure at the major races and push through when something goes wrong is his weakness.
