If Salazar was the one who sneaked on the course to hand only Rupp something, not matter what it was, then that should be a DQ. That would be a shame because it is unlikely Rupp would not finish in 3rd; maybe a closer to 4th but unlikely to be caught.

Every runner is allowed to attach whatever they would like to their bottles at the aid stations as long as what is attached is within the rules. It was within the rules because the rules also mention that officials are the ones controlling what is handed out at the aid stations. If new hats were illegal an official would not have allowed them to be attached. Just because Rupp/Salazar were the only ones to think of it doesn't mean it is a point of contention. It means they operated within the rules and to one degree or another had a better strategy than the rest of the field.

Rupp also was not the only person running through the aid stations who had someone handing him his bottle. A number of runners had officials holding out their bottles for them. He collected his refreshments in the same manner and in the same area the other runners did and did not receive any special aid when doing so.

Perhaps then the language then is vague and open to exploitation. OK. Did Galen Rupp receive an unfair advantage in being handed a fresh hat (really an unknown) at multiple times during the 2016 Mens Olympic Marathon?

Regardless, this is either language IAAF must tighten up, or others must exploit as well. If gear is allowable under "refreshments", then this will mean anything to sunglasses, masks, gloves, arm sleeves, or other sport-related gear.

But, was Salazar the one setting out the hats for Rupp? That seems to be the issue at hand.

A sense for the dramatic. To make a legitimate argument it is best to be reasonable. There is a big difference between a refreshment and a physical aid.

If I was running a marathon in a humid 80 degrees I would think a dry, chilled hat would be very refreshing.

Then I guess the USA needs more "spoiled brats" to win some f-ing medals.

Also, if becoming a spoiled brat would allow you to have running abilities anywhere near Rupps, would you do it?

Rupp is also not the only runner to receive a fresh hat along the course. Meb started out with a blue hat and tossed it about mid-race. A couple of miles late, boom, fresh white hat. Maybe some runners or all had this option.

As long as every athlete had the option. And, as long as no coach was involved setting the hats up.

Maybe it wasn't a Salazar thing, maybe the organizers thought of it and the athletes either signed up for it or not. Weren't the misters only in the men's race. Perhaps their was some brainstorming after the hot women's race.

There were misters on the woman's course.

Totally disagree. The only thing that matters is the rules. If they did not break a rule, then there is no issue. Why on earth should someone be required or expected to disclose strategy? We can reasonably assume every runner had the same opportunity that Rupp did. The fact that those runners did not think of the idea should not be held against Rupp. Strategy is vital to competition.

A hat is not included in the refreshments rule. That is not the intent of that rule.
