The media is a joke. What Lochte and his boys did was what a lot of drunk people could do. They sensationalize it to create a story and money at the expense of these poor guys. A lot of people lie to cover their ass, these guys were just stupid and unorganized about it. For those who are confused about the "white privilege" thing, ask yourself what would have happened if Lashawn Merritt had been wasted, pissing on the floor, tearing down displays, smashing mirrors etc at a gas station in Brazil. Or the US.
1. He would be lucky not to be shot by the police or the gas station security (either in Brazil or the US).
2. Merritt, after trashing a bathroom with Gatlin (interesting image) and insulting hosts with a lie *to police* about being gratuitously robbed, would not have IOC officials saying "they're just kids having some fun."
3. It wouldn't happen. Because Merritt (like any well-travelled black person) would not proceed like Lochte: with the assumption he can do whatever he wants like it's spring break at Fort Lauderdale and the locals will clean up after him free of charge or hassle. That expectation doesn't come from nowhere. It's the reality of that privilege things you're asking about.

I totally see your point, but I don't feel like that is happening here. I feel like Lochte and the guys are getting their asses handed to them. I am not sure if black guys would get shot dead, that is a bit aggressive since there doesn't seem to have been any fighting, but they would certainly draw some racist discussion.

We must be reading different things. Initially, I don't think ANYONE believed the Brazilian cops. It wasn't until more information was released slowly that people now realize what happened.

What I have yet to understand in the first place is, why would Lochte and crew even said anything to the media about this. Did they ever file a police report? I didn't think they did. And if not, why would they go all over the media with a very embellished story? My thought is if they just would have gone on with their lives after being "shaken down" for $50, nothing would ever have come of this. Instead, one guys is now out $11k for what amounts to pretending to be a victim. And the black eye they get individually, for the US swimming team, and for the US as a whole, is a steep price to pay for "boys being boys." Lochte may be the brains behind this (really???) but the others went along.
I wasn't there, but I'm pretty confident that they knew they weren't being held up. What thief would make them sit on a curb to wait for the police. So I don't buy that excuse that they thought they were being robbed.

Lochte isn't getting railroaded. And the incident at the gas station would've been rather minor, except they tried to flee without paying for damages and then lied blatantly about it to the media. He even insisted on NBC, "we were the victims in this." He has dug his own PR grave with all this.
It's not an exact analogy, but deflategate would've been rather minor except that Tom Brady, Bill Bellacheat, and the Patriots kept lying and denying about it all.
Back in the day, what Nixon did at Watergate was somewhat minor in the grand scope of things, but the lying and denying dug his grave.
