You made a payment in good faith, the contract- even if made verbally- is binding. It depends on the specific housing code in PA as to whether or not you are considered a tenant without a lease after a certain amount of days but if he is kicking you out, at bare minimum a small claims action would yield you the return of your rent and probably an amount for relocation due to being kicked out without proper notice or cause.

how much of a hassle would that cause me? I have done small claims before, but not in this country. only in the UK.

He has told me he will give me the money back.

In the county I am in, I have never heard of landlords following the codes, but they are in place. landlords have to register for sure, but they don't.

He also told you that you could stay more than a week.

The land lord wants you out because he and everyone else who lives there found out in just two weeks that you are a jerk. He tried to let you down nicely last week but you are too dense to understand what he was telling you. Your over-reaction and inability to accept the situation and deal with it in a civil manners illustrates your jerkness.

Verbal contracts are worth the paper they are printed on. Next time sign a lease then you have legal standing.

Get your money back and find somewhere else to live. Sign a proper lease. Court is not worth the time or energy for one month of rent, and this guy sounds like he'll make your life as painful as he possibly can while you still have him in it.

The landlord's excuse is obvious BS. Also, he gave you seven days notice since he told you on Friday. Verbal notice of eviction is acceptable in PA courts.

Not sure what type of landlord would not require a lease AND a deposit, but without a lease you are shit outta luck in court.

If the landlord gives you your money back and doesn't through your stuff on the side walk then you are ahead of the game.
