This is also a professional meet, where the fields are set way in advance. This is not a HS invite where the entries are up on directathletics until 3 days before the race.

Hunter ran 3:57 indoors a couple of months before ,Slagowski's poorly rabbited time trial. The comparison is hard. Slags speed is good. His strength is questionable given his slow 2 mile and cross country times. This might be hard to believe given his speed, I think Tamagno will beat him at Pre off a hard pace.

Tamagno's the same guy who, as I recall, did not accompany his team to Nike Cross Nationals, but ran Foot Locker instead. Now he's skipping the Cal State Meet, and other meets leading up to it, so that he can chase sub 4 at an invitational meet. To each his own, I guess, but doesn't he owe something to his high school to represent them in team/interscholastic competitions? Even Alan Webb kept running in high school meets, even though there was no one who could touch him. He's a great talent, obviously, but has improved only marginally since his soph year.

So what, no one will care if he wins another state title. If he runs a sub 4 mile he will be a legend! Think before you post. His team has known this along the way.

A little bit of a reality check for those thinking Hunter should definitely be in the Bowerman mile and Slagowski/Tamagno with him.

At best, I see Hunter threatening for top 5 in thenational mile, MAYBE. Those are no chumps. Slagowski and Tamagno will benefit from being able to run with the pack for the majority.

None of them would benefit from running in a battle for last place in the Bowerman mile. They're good, they're not 3:50/close in 54 sec good. Put Hunter in the national field.

That is by far the best option for these athletes and probably for Hunter as well. even in the international mile these athletes will finish DFL, why run in a race where you will be 30 meter off of the pace? As a practical matter, Webb is the only H.S. athlete that has benefited from the big race. The big mile is a DL race on par with an Olympic final some years and Centro is perhaps the only U.S. athlete that really belongs in that race. I like the concept of allowing H.S. athletes to enter Pre, but the Bowerman should be reserved for those once in decade athletes like Webb and perhaps Hunter.

According to the list you just provided, no one in the field last year was 3:50/close in 54 good.

Hunter will beat 3-4 people in the Bowerman mile. He will run under 3:58. It will be faster than either Slagowski or Tamagno in the International mile.

You will still find a way to complain after the fact.

Nobody in the Bowerman mile field was that good? Here's a link to last year's re-cap of the races:

The Bowerman heat closed in 1:51. That's not the ideal way for these kids to run, Hunter will likely have a personal rabbit I'd imagine way in the back alone. Even if he ran 3:57.0 he'd be 2nd to last if it played out like last year.

Heck, the International mile went out in 2:01 last year and closed in 1:54! That'd be a heck of a race to watch the three of them in as at least they'd get a shot to be with the field!

My position is not that personal glory trumps all else. Forcing a kid to run in a meet that as you stated he would easily win isn't fair. Sorry that you think he should be run in a bunch of events to score points for his team at the state meet. They wouldn't win it anyway.

Not much of a brutal cali schedule for tamagno this time around as he'll be fresher than times the past few years since he's skipping finals, masters, and state. Race after race each week can be brutal

There's always a couple guys that blow up or fall off the pace, so Hunter should be able to hit like 3:55 with them and most likey pass them...or at least have people to battle.

The meet director put these high school milers in the correct races in my opinion. Slagowski and Tomagno will have people to more comfortably draft behind in the National Mile. Hunter, who was Footlocker champ and has run 1:48, is better equipped to survive the hot Bowerman Mile pace (if he doesn't go out too aggressively at the start) and to possibly go after Webb's record. No rain is currently in the forecast this weekend in Eugene, so the weather should not be a major factor.

Getting knocked around by the International Mile pack will be a much HARDER race than the BM, where there will be a clear run chasing the backs of the others.

Obviously Hunter will have the much easier path to get a fast time.

Too bad they're not in the same race for this reason.

Agreed. Absolutely zero reason why a 3:59 solo HS miler shouldn't be in the Bowerman.

There is 100% reason why a 3:59 or even a 3:57 HS miler shouldn't be in the Bowerman mile. It is for WORLD ELITES up to ten seconds faster than that.

They should both be in the National mile, where they would still finish well back of the lead and be just as likely to be towed to headline-grabbing "records" to make $$$ for money-grubbing Nike/Pre, while they as amateurs never see a dime of course.
