I'm not clear on what people believe is the big advantage to having more foam under foot. Because I don't land on my heel, I really don't need all the cushioning there. There is no doubt that, unless you have nearly perfect mechanics (i.e., neutral), the extra padding even under the forefoot causes some instability which strains your ligaments, etc., which in turn can cause overuse injuries. Also, the kind of cushioning makes a difference. I don't find the Tiger Paws or the Mavericks more cushiony than the H Streets. No doubt that the H Streets don't have much structural support, but they are very responsive allowing you to adjust your mechanics. In my opinion, the future is in very thin, but very resilient cushioning materials, not in bulky heel cushioning devices.
It seems to me that many injuries come from runners jogging in bulky trainers and then cranking in flats or spikes. I believe that you need to gradually get used to the flats or spikes, so it makes sense to incorporate them into your everyday running.
There's not really any science behind the 12mm heel-forefoot difference. It just happened.
