My favorite video of Conner Mantz is still this one from Arcadia 2013 (http://www.arcadiainvitational.org/eprofile.php?event_id=63&do=videos&video_id=84417), where as a 10th grader running against the top HSers in the country, he immediately goes to the front and then opens up a huge gap over the rest of the field...before crashing and finishing 21st in 9:04. It's still fun to watch, though.

now here's the question... Can Conner call himself a sub 4 miler? He ran it at 4000+ft of altitude, but it was also a very steep grade downhill.

I was there for that race. When I watched him running this mile, I was initially going to sarcastically reply with "that's nearly as fast as he open at Arcadia", but thought no one would get the reference. He earned a lot of respect in my eyes they way he held on that night after a very quick start.
That video was cool! Sure it was down a hill (which is undoubtedly why he included the profile and elevation right on the screen) but it was still pretty impressive. Also impressed watching him run away from the field at US junior nationals in XC. Looked like he was kicking for about 2 miles!
david torrence does it every year too. i think he ran 3:44-46ishi ran a sub 4 mile once downhill too. it gave me about 20 seconds faster than my pb and it was less effort than my pb (4:18). all you need is natural leg speed to be able to keep your legs in front of you and you kind of 'fall' downhill.

Dude- watch the video! He runs a mile in under 4 minutes. Of course he is a sub 4 guy. I'm not sure if it counts as a HS Sub 4 though this late in the Summer.

Yes he ran a mile in under 4 minutes. However he used the acceleration of gravity to get himself there. To allow gravity to count in the measurement of a sub-4 would be to say that sky-divers, who travel at about 56m/s (thats a sub-29 second mile), are sub-4 milers. Its like a wind-aided 100m, the time is not ratified for records.
Not a sub-4 miler. Still though, an incredibly talented kid who will certainly join that list and many others if he keeps at it.
I'm just an old hobby jogger now but back in the day I also ran a 3:56 downhill mile. I was also a 3rd place Foot Locker Regionals guy... in the B race. My PR for the 1600 is 4:25. If you know how to open up and let gravity work for you the 4:00 barrier is BFD.
To the poster of the Arcadia video. Gracias. I see one glaring
potential issue with Mr. Mantz, is that left arm, looks like Belayneh Dinsamos' minus the full clock like motion of the arm, you should break that habit and get your form more bi-laterally. Form will serve you better in
the sprint/finishes. Anyway, technically your body's propulsion should be more locomotive like, your arms should be like the arms of the wheel on a locomotive. At this stage in your running career, habits could be broken, just remember when your out doing it. Best way to break the habit, seriously is to find a very steep hill about 440 yards, do fifty sprints up (arms like a locomotive), jog back down, drop your arms. Notice the locomotive like action of your arms should sync back together.
But since you're a junior you might want to try this before you graduate high school, just before the track season (Jan is a good time). Plot and do a start stop marathon on the road, just found my old route map. Good thing it was a cloudy day.
During the stops like traffic lights you can stretch, but stop the watch when you go in for a drink at a gas station or better yet have a friend follow you. With that said, if you can do under 2:06.00 (yes two hours and six minutes) for a full marathon adding about 220yards for a margin of error. We must also to remember to 'run for God'. Have fun.
He dropped almost 300 vertical feet. More than one foot per second. A little perspective here: A marathon cannot drop much more than that and still be a legal race. This is ONE mile, not 26.
I wish the kid luck, but let's not get caught up in thinking this is anything other than a stunt.
Conner actually has a training log online that he logs daily, and he includes goals of running a sub four mile and he does not consider himself a sub four mile even after his downhill mile.
