In 2013 WADA budget was 228milion $US and did about 270000 tests. Back of the envelope math says that's about 850 a test
I'd bet the appearance promotional fee contract for the big name athletes has part of the fee in nonrefundable form-after all the meet gets to use the name in pre-meet publicity. So create a $1000 fee payable to WADA for late withdrawal.

The fact that athletes still compete for FREE and DL meets is atrocious.
Obviously the big names deserve bonuses for drawing the house/crowds, but they can't race without a full field, and knowing a guy like Nick Symmonds has always had to appear for free, it's a scam, baby.

That really is all athletics. I know a guy around where I live who is going to the olympic trials, and he's a phenomenal athlete, but not world class. He made 18,000 dollars his best year, the year he qualified for the trials. Moreover, look at all of the football players that play the preseason, drop a pass or two and are cut and their careers are over. Pretty dangerous game.

My immediate reaction to the stuff about Symmonds was "His agent isn't doing a very good job for him."
I really don't know the ins and outs of the pro T&F world, but I gather Symmonds agent is Chris Layne, and it doesn't look like Mr Layne quite has the clout at the moment to do much for Symmonds. Layne has an interesting client list - see

A DL meet is probably more like a Hollywood movie than it is like an NBA team. No, because your friend who qualified for the Olympic Trials is not playing basketball overseas. He would be an above average player in the NBA.

This is not captilasm it's a monopoly. Personally I don't watch races with Mo in them becasue of the NOP doping (thyroid or otherwise) issues so from my point of view he is driving viewer numbers down. Plus ~4 min 1500m runners being given a ton of cash and contracts just because they are women while some 3-3X 1500m runner or low 13 min 5000m runner is being paid nothing in a DL meet. Ridiculous.
