How do you explain this performance without the coaches? Yes, it takes years of development to get to this stage, and yes the coaches were likely helpful. However, this kid is genetically gifted and even with average coaching he would have gotten close to this point. He seems to know what he's doing without their guidance now. I will say though that he is probably using the same training principals unless he is being coached by someone else. But don't have illusions of grandeur my friend, any coach with a general understanding of training principles would have helped this young man just as much, probably without the headaches. Don't be so prickly fella. I am sure you are a fine high school coach.

Which is why this will not be a NFHS certified performance. Also Jim Ryun beat Peter Snell at this age, which is "slightly" more impressive than the people Maton didn't beat. The way I see it, equating this performance with what Ryun did in high school is not legitimate. And what Webb did at Pre is also pretty obvious.

who is comparing his run to Ryun?It was an impressive race with the conditions. Isn't that enough?Also , Webb ran his amazing mile with Pros, last weekend Grant Fisher ran 3;42 against college age folks. The cool thing is come June it will just be race of high school kids. Very exciting.

Most states have age guidelines to compete in sports. While he is a year older than most, he is still within those guidelines.

He is in HS...That means its a legitimate HS sub 4!! Unless the country puts an age restriction on what is considered HS that counts nationwide he is LEGITIMATELY a HS runner.
IF you would like to make your own classification that you have to be under 19 then you can start your own list.
He sits next to HS kids everyday in class. I think that counts enough....
If they don't ratify it has nothing to do with his age. What part of" he is within the age for high school" don't you understand. Are you truly this dense? Ryun had just turned 18 years old when he ran 3:55 in high school and beat Snell. Maton is already 19 and still in high school. Did he flunk a few years?

Maton is grown man running under the guise as a high school kid. Much the same as Texas hs football players abusing scoop enrollment rules in so that as 19 year olds they will older and stronger than their peers for the glory of Friday night lights.
Ryan was a few days past his 17th birthday when he first broke 4:00, and was barely 18 when he beat Peter Snell, and broke his first American Record.
No, a sub 4:00 by a 19 year old grown man isn't really anything similar to what the other high school kids who broke the magic barrier.
