Guys, guys, guys! This thread title is pretty clearly addressed to Matt Tegenkamp. I don't understand why 15 or so of you John Q. Hobbyjoggers need weigh in with your asinine theories and conjecture.
Now, let's all sit back and just wait for Teg to reply like the OP obviously intended.

Are you Matt Tegenkamp? No, you are cbenson4. Please refrain from commenting on a thread that is clearly meant for Matt Tegenkamp alone. Maybe once Matt Tegenkamp responds, then you can throw your three cents in. Until then, please be quiet. Every time I see this thread back at the top of the forum list, I assume Matt Tegenkamp has finally responded only to be disappointed each and every time by stupid further talk of electrolytes from Non-Matt Tegenkamps.
Would be nice if he did respond! I think most pros are a little too scared to come on the message boards anymore. I don't blame them though. It can get a bit rough.
If any pros revealed their identity on this forum they might never stop being harassed by trolls

Tegenkamp claims it was a cramp, aka a fluke not representative of serious fitness problems... maybe, according to him, a fluid intake problem, an electrolyte problem.
I (look above) said, skepticism about this is reasonable, as would be the belief that Tegenkamp does have some training and fitness issues.
But I contextualized it: I think indeed he went out too fast, but a good half marathon performance is still within reach. The training issues can be fixed, medium-term. His marathon debut is good, he has great past fitness, he made the Olympic team in the 10k (2nd best in the country! where's everybody else?) in 2012. His former teammate professionals are all basically retired until further proof.

You didn't pass 9th grade biology, did you? Apparently you don't understand how cells work. Electric gradients are essential to animal life. You probably have a graduate degree in medicine/nutrition/exercise physiology and you give people crappy unscientific advice to worsen their health while you and other thieves make money. Judging by your ad hoc name you are probably a small town provincial yet arrogant idiot from the Midwest.

In basketball, we have this phrase called "cherry-picking." It's related to orchard terms so integral to the culture, since basketball was invented initially with a Georgia peach basket by Dr. James Naismith.

Teg ran 13:04 nine years ago, and sub 13 six years ago. Not a lot of guys left from that era still making the rounds. Good on him.
One thing if for sure, if he's not just a hobby jogger not, he DID NOT "jog it in" after suffering a calf cramp. No elite would do that.
Besides, is there any doubt his best days are behind him?

I do have a graduate degree in nutrition, and I originally posted something that I thought would be understood clearly. Although homeostatic electrolyte concentrations are vital for good health and even for muscle contraction, no one can say with any degree of certainty that electrolyte imbalances actually cause the type of muscle cramp that Teg experienced. Do we have to say any more about this?
