USATF takes Alana Hadley out of US Olympic Marathon Trials

I thought an athlete can get their amateur NCAA status back by giving back prizes/money they won as a pro (I assume appearance fees beyond transpo/room/board must be included) . How much money has this young lady raked in since going pro? ( I'm guessing LR fan boys will say $100,000-125,000hehe ).

Is this give back thing actually an option?

Patti Catalano Dillon ran 11 minutes faster than this girl 34 years ago and Grete The Great was putting up even shorter times. Yes there is a chance 2:28 gets a top 5 USMarathon Champs finish.

One thing is sure if the IAAF rule is not posted by the Trials date USATF better let her run the trials. Imagine the stink the new era USATF would be covered in if they denied her a start because of an age restriction rule that never became reality?

This girl posted a youtube video showing a 20-mile workout she did at the end of a 118 mile week. 118 MILES! She's a HS senior. That is ridiculous.

She needs to cut 30 seconds per mile to make the team. If she were ever to even break 2:32 it will be on a wind-aided course in 45-degree weather.

Dad has been training her since she was 5 or 6 years old. Running Times did an article (June 2011) of her mileage progression, long runs, workouts, PRs on a yearly basis. With her training age, she is about as close to her ceiling as one can imagine.

6 2-3 times a week 4-6 miles all easy pace 29:13

7 3-4 times a week 5-10 miles all easy pace 25:35

Very good point.

Maybe Hadleys should take this as a sign that they should move down in distance for a while? For her to have a shot at the team she'd basically have to run her 5k PR pace for 26.2 miles.

The USATF must not have read the rule either if they had her posted as qualifying for so long. Who knows, maybe someone on the USATF staff was reading thru old LRC threads and made the eligibility discovery.

If an 18 y/o Kenyan was that fast, I'm sure AK would happen to find a new birth certificate under the goat skins. Maybe Alana, who happens to be born in January (yeah right) could shave a few days off her age somehow. Maybe she wasn't born after the Eddlemann's cows got into the Greer's garden, but instead before Mr Turner nearly cut his arm off trying to get the pigs out of the barn before it burned down. Just saying...

say what you want, but this new rule is PURE BS. I say this as a fan of the sport.

If marathons are so bad for adults nonetheless, then ban all competitors. Who enacted this rule? The guy that does studies that running is bad for you?

Just crossing the finish line at the Trials will be a victory for her.

Remember O'Brien stopping during the trials marathon and helping up a competitor who'd fallen? Classy move.

She seems like a nice young lady. Hope she continues to improve and stay healthy.

But it will be a shame if this story overshadows the attention of the real contenders for the Olympic Team.

Ha, good find. This was a total oversight on their part! The age criteria was on the USATF website for the 2012 Trials. Even the interviewer brings it up. They shouldn't be shocked by all of this.

I don't know. If someone met all the criteria listed the 2016 Marathon trials website, met the USATF's age requirements for national championships, had run the qualifying time and was listed by the USATF as a qualifier, how or why would they know to look at the 2012 Track Trials PDF documents? They weren't running the 2012 Trials

If they ran the time and the USATF listed them as a qualifier, They would assume they are in. Right? Obviously the USATF did for the past year.

All this may be for not though, as the IAAF hasn't even released the 2016 Olympics age requirements yet. Given that, no one, not the USATF nor the Hadley know if she is eligible or not yet.

What puzzles me then is why the USATF decided to suddenly decide to de-list her. Based on what? And why did they notify her?
