the course was not exactly a race track. The 5k loops had a lot of hard turns that are hardly conducive to quick times. Add to that the temps (70s), humidity 70%, and the fact that Max freaking won a 5k obstacle course race (for $30K) a few weeks ago, this is just an epic performance.

For some comparison, Jonas Buud (who came in 2nd today) is a serious legit distance runner. Came in 2nd at Comrades in 2013 in absolutely epic fashion. Beating that guy alone is quite a feat. Setting a US record under those circumstances is just incredible.

Ultra-haters.... please give Max some credit. Traveling to Doha, the time and performance he had in the heat and humidity deserves some respect. Nice job Max!

three 180 degree turns x twenty laps = sixty 180 degree turns. Ouch. Those turns + the tile surface + the fact that it is 60+ f***ing miles sounds very painful.

Why can't they get more prize money for these events. Correct me if I'm wrong, but runners have to pay their own way to these international events and even top 5 appear to come home with very little. According to World 100k website, $10,000 was split evenly amongst men and women. So breakdown was probably something like 2000, 1500, 1000, 750, 500, 250. For a World Championship? Seriously? No wonder so many countries don't participate or have partial teams.

US Men Gold???.. Max's performance was great, but please don't make this sound like some huge monumental accomplishment with the USA Men's team win. Teams are made up of 6 runners with the top 3 runners scoring. Only Italy, Russia, and USA entered full teams of 6. I think that speaks volumes of the seriousness of the team event. If all teams have to cover their own travel expenses and minimal prize money is offered, no wonder so many countries skip this or are only partially represented. Yes it's great, and an honor for most athletes, to represent your country at an international sporting event, but a few other incentives would be nice!

It would certainly help the popularity of the event around the world if they made this an Olympic event. More countries would participate, the countries that already participate would put together better teams, and obviously the runners would receive much more support and much greater monetary benefit.

I think it's safe to say many posting on here can agree that Max's performance was very respectable. I think it's also safe to say most posting on here do not view the USA Men's title as a monumental moment in US Distance Running.

Exactly, Way just finished 13th in the World 100k, slightly worse than Commonwealths where he was 10th and slightly better than London where he was 15th. I guess those races must also be filled with a bunch of hacks.

What does Way's World 100K time he ran yesterday equate to for a marathon? Not a 2:16. Runners who go after a good ultra time in these race "blow-up" all the time. There were likely runners with 2:30 to 2:40 marathon PR's who beat Way yesterday.

Here's what I like about Max - he'll seemingly try anything, or at least go out of his comfort zone. As Sage mentioned, short, long, ultra, track, road, trail - he's in the mix. He ran Western States this year which was an unknown distance for him, without a pacer - he's not hung up on all the ultra running dogma. And to top it off his name is Max f***ing King.
